Getting Started

Signing Up for StockTwits

Click here to sign up for StockTwits.  You can connect to your Twitter, Facebook, Google, or AOL account here.  Fill in the fields, and click Create My Account

Linking Your Twitter Account

If you have a Twitter Account and would like to link it up, you can do so by clicking Click here to Link Twitter. A Twitter OAuth window will pop up asking for your Twitter credentials and for you to Allow StockTwits to access your Twitter account. Enter your credentials and click Allow.

Importing Friends from Twitter

Once you set up your Twitter Account you will be given the option to import your Twitter friends into StockTwits. Select the people you would like to add and click Add Friends

Setting up Your Profile

Once you have added your friends click the link to fill out your Quick Profile. Choose the answers that best fit you and click Update.

Inviting Friends on Other Networks

If you have friends on other networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, you'd like to invite, you can quickly do it. Once you are done click Finished! Take Me to the Site!

Updating StockTwits

Posting to StockTwits

Posting to StockTwits is easy. To send a message you must first bring up the message box. To do so click on the white Click here to share trade ideas box above the main stream.

StockTwits aggregates conversation by ticker symbol as well as general market commentary by using $TICKER and $$ tags.

Posting about a Specific Symbol ($TICKER Tags)

To post about a specific Stock, Futures, or Forex symbol you simply have to put a $ before the ticker symbol in the message box and click Post See below:

This will work for most domestic US equities.  Check out the supported Forex Symbols and Futures Symbols.

Posting Commentary ($$ Tags)

To post general market or economic commentary you can use the $$ tag. These tags must be applied at the beginning or end of the message as shown below:

Posting to Twitter

If you connected your Account to Twitter when you signed up you can cc: messages to Twitter from StockTwits so that your Twitter followers receive the message as well. To do this simply click on the Twitter button at the bottom of the message box. When it is blue, your messages will also be sent to Twitter:

Posting a Chart Using Chart.ly

Through our site, chart.ly, we allow users to upload and share charts they have created.

To post a chart using chart.ly, click on the Chart symbol in the message box (shown below):


Type in the symbol of the chart (no $ tag), click Select File and locate the chart you wish to share on your computer.


When you have selected the chart click OK and to upload the chart. Add a message and click Post to share.

Shortening and Sharing a Link Using Stk.ly

We have created our own URL shortener to share investment links using StockTwits. To share a link click on the URL-shortener icon in the message box as shown below:

Paste the link you wish to shorten and click OK

A stk.ly link will appear in the message box. Add a message and make sure you tag it appropriately to send it to StockTwits:

Mentions

To reply to someone's message or simply send them a message click on the reply button on their tweet in the stream, or type @username in the message box:

When you click on the reply button the message box will pop up and you will be able to type your message. You can simply type this into the message box at any time as well.

You can also check who has sent you @replies by checking your Mentions stream on the left sidebar:

Direct Messages

To send someone a Direct Message click on the Direct Message envelope button on their tweet or type "D username" at the beginning of the tweet (NOTE: User must be following you to send a DM):

When you click the Direct Message button, a message box will appear and you can type your message:

To check Direct Messages sent to you click on the Direct Messages stream in the sidebar:

Symbols Recognized by StockTwits

Currently, StockTwits recognizes US stocks (excluding micro cap, Pink Sheet, and bulletin board stocks), FX symbols and futures symbols. Check out the supported Forex Symbols and Futures Symbols.

We plan on expanding our list of symbols in the future. If there is a symbol you would like recognized that is not, please email us at support@stocktwits.com.

The All Stream

The All Stream gives you an automatically refreshing feed of all tagged tweets that get posted to StockTwits. You will get a ton of information from this and see tweets on everything from daytrading to currencies to global macro etc.  This is the firehose!

The Suggested Stream

The Suggested Stream is a filtered stream of tagged tweets from the StockTwits members that we suggest you follow. Suggested users have been handpicked by StockTwits because they are knowledgeable and trustworthy. They have also shown to be generous, amiable, and constructive over time.  This is far from an exhaustive list of great talent but provides a way for you to get started building a group that you like to follow.

The Friends Stream

The Friends Stream is a filtered stream of tagged tweets from those you are following on Twitter and on StockTwits.

The Charts Stream is a filtered stream of charts shared by StockTwits community members using Chart.ly.

Mentions

Mentions is a stream of tweets from users that are public messages or replies to you.  More specifically, if your name is @JohnDoe it will be a stream of tweets containing "@JohnDoe".

Using Watch Lists

Watch Lists

Watch Lists are a great way to follow a basket of stocks, futures, or forex pairs in one stream. Below we will walk through how to create and view a Watch List stream to StockTwits.

Creating a Watch List

To create a Watch List click on the Watch List button above the Real Time Streams.

A window should pop-out. Click on the green plus sign in the upper-right hand corner to add a Watch List

Enter a name for your Watch List and click Next Step

Enter the ticker symbols you wish to include in the list separated by a space (and without the $ before the ticker). The click the green plus sign to add them.

The symbols will show up in the list below. Add more or delete any if you wish. Click the Watch lists button to return to the main screen.

Viewing a Watch List Stream

To view a Watch List stream navigate to the main Watch Lists page by clicking the Watch List button above the Real Time Streams:

Locate the Watch List you wish to view and click View and it will show up as a Real Time Stream

Following a User

Then, to follow the user click on the follow icon as shown below:

This can also be accomplished easily from the user's profile page.

Unfollowing a User

If you are following a someone whom you no longer wish for him/her to appear in your Friends Stream you can choose to unfollow.  To do so, hover over the tweet and click on the Cog symbol to view user options:

Then, to unfollow the user click on the unfollow icon as shown below:

This can also be accomplished easily from the user's profile page.

Blocking a User

If there is a user you do not want to show up in any of the streams you view, you can block him/her. To do so, hover over the tweet and click on the Cog symbol to view user options:

Then, to block the user click on the block icon as shown below:

This can also be accomplished easily from the user's profile page.

Popping out a Stream

If you have other applications running you may wish to pop out a StockTwits stream to view and send tweets. To do so, click on the Stream Options button right above the stream:

A box will pop up and you will be given the option to pop out the stream:

Once you click on the Pop out Stream button a narrow window will pop up giving you the ability to view the stream you are on and send messages to StockTwits.

Popping out StockTwits TV

StockTwits TV is a great addition to the real time idea flow on StockTwits. To pop out StockTwits TV without leaving the site, simply click on the Pop-out player banner in the right sidebar:

A new window will open where you can watch StockTwits TV.

Account Settings

Settings

Settings allow you to edit your profile, link up your Twitter Account, as well as Add an Avatar to your profile page.

Linking Your Twitter Account

We give you the ability to link your Twitter account to your StockTwits account so that you can send messages for your Twitter Followers to see. To do this, click on the Settings link in the upper right-hand side of the page:

Click on the Account tab and then Click here to link Twitter.

A Twitter OAuth window will pop up. Fill in your Twitter credentials and click Allow.

Voila! Your Twitter account is now linked. Click Update to confirm the change to your account.

Editing Your Profile

To edit your profile, click on the My Profile link on the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Your profile page will pop up. Click on It's You! Edit Profile.

Fill in your profile information and click Update.

Uploading an Avatar

To upload an avatar click Settings in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Select the Picture tab, choose a file to upload and click Upload.
