Tesla Inc. (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk on Thursday announced that the company’s joint project with xAI, known as “Macrohard” or “Digital Optimus”, works on all its cars equipped with AI4 hardware.

“Oh and it works in all AI4-equipped cars, so your car can do office work for you when not driving,” he said in a post on X.

The Tesla CEO also added that the company is deploying millions of dedicated Digital Optimus units in the field at Superchargers, where it has about seven gigawatts of available power.

What Is Macrohard Or Digital Optimus?

Macrohard or Digital Optimus is a joint project between Tesla and Musk’s AI startup, xAI.

The Tesla CEO announced the project on Wednesday as a system that can emulate the functions of software companies.

This involves using Grok as the “conductor” or “navigator” to direct digital Optimus, which processes and acts upon the past five seconds of real-time computer screen video, keyboard, and mouse actions.

“You can think of it as Digital Optimus AI being System 1 (instinctive part of the mind) and Grok being System 2. (thinking part of the mind),” Musk said, explaining how the two coordinate.

He also likened Grok to a much more advanced and sophisticated version of turn-by-turn navigation software.

Combining Tesla And Nvidia Hardware

Musk stated that Macrohard will run on Tesla’s in-house chipset, paired with expensive Nvidia server hardware.

“This will run very competitively on the super low cost Tesla AI4 ($650) paired with relatively frugal use of the much more expensive xAI Nvidia hardware. And it will be the only real-time smart AI system. This is a big deal,” Musk added.

This comes after Tesla announced an investment of $2 billion in xAI in January 2026. A month later, another Musk-led company, SpaceX, acquired xAI in an all-stock deal that valued the space startup at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion.

TSLA stock is down 11% year-to-date, but up 61% over the past 12 months.
