Tesla Inc.’s (TSLA) autonomous driving rival Mobileye Global Inc. (MBLY) on Monday announced that it has secured a deal with a leading U.S. automaker.
Mobileye stated that the company will integrate the Mobileye Driver Monitoring System into future vehicles equipped with Mobileye's EyeQ6L system-on-chip, with the start of production targeted for 2027
Mobileye shares soared more than 8% in Monday’s pre-market trade before paring some of the gains to hover 4% higher at the time of writing. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits around the company trended in the ‘neutral’ territory.
Tesla had partnered with Mobileye to develop the Elon Musk-led EV giant’s Autopilot driving system. However, the partnership ended in 2016 when Mobileye partnered with German automaker BMW.
How Does Mobileye’s DMS Work?
Mobileye stated that its in-cabin sensing platform includes both DMS and Occupant Monitoring (OMS), running alongside Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) perception on a single chip.
The platform combines in-cabin sensing with external road perception to assess driver engagement based on driving conditions, tracking where the driver is looking and whether their attention aligns with the road environment.
“Automakers are looking to scale advanced driving features across their lineups without the cost penalty of additional hardware or complex system integration. Mobileye DMS delivers on both,” the company stated.
Focusing On Safety
Mobileye stated that its DMS focuses on driver safety, at a time when there is an increasing push for autonomous driving. The company added that its DMS is designed to correlate driver gaze with real-world road conditions from ADAS cameras, to catch distractions that cabin-only systems may miss and recognize when the driver is already aware.
This system results in fewer false alerts, more precise interventions, and a higher level of autonomy, the company added.
MBLY stock is down 24% year-to-date, while TSLA stock is down 16%. The Vanguard Extended Market Index Fund ETF (VXF) is up 14% over the past 12 months, while the Roundhill Robotaxi Autonomous Vehicles & Technology ETF (CABZ) is down 18%.
