When debt levels outpaced the gold supply, Dalio noted, “the monetary system broke down,” leading either to deflationary depressions or currency devaluation.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Strategic Allocation Over Speculation</h2>For investors, Dalio recommends viewing gold as a strategic asset rather than a speculative one. “When investors ask me if they should buy or sell gold based on whether I think it will go up or down, I tell them that’s a tactical, secondary question,” he wrote.&nbsp;He suggested holding between 5% and 15% of a portfolio in gold, depending on the investor’s risk profile and other assets. “Any deviations from that portfolio should only take place if the investor believes that they have better abilities to market-time which investments are better than others. China's President Xi Jinping has also indicated that he is open to talks, which has reduced the uncertainty that had been pressuring global markets.The bank also said that a resolution of the U.S. government shutdown and potential slowdown in inflation could also weigh on bullion’s prices. "The litany of worries that are driving gold higher may eventually need to become the base case to sustain this bull run through 2026," Citi said, adding that the medium-to-long-term case to allocate towards gold as a hedge against possible geopolitical and economic concerns remains strong.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Is Retail Thinking?</h2>Retail sentiment on Stocktwits about the <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GLD">SPDR Gold Shares ETF</a> (GLD) was still in the ‘bullish’ territory at the time of writing. The VanEck Gold Miners ETF also tumbled over 9%.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Caused Bullion's Decline?</h2>The plunge in gold prices followed U.S. President Donald Trump's statement on Monday that he expected to reach a fair trade deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, while also downplaying concerns over differences in their views on Taiwan.“The unwind follows a spectacular rally (almost $1,000 in two months) driven by FOMO that pushed gold into extreme overbought territory, leaving it vulnerable to a sharp snap back,” IG analyst Tony Sycamore said.However, on Tuesday, Trump sounded cautious over a trade deal with China. "I think we're going to have a very successful meeting. Certainly, there are a lot of people that are waiting for it," Trump said about his upcoming meeting with Xi in South Korea. "Maybe it won't happen. Things can happen where, for instance, maybe somebody will say, 'I don't want to meet. It's too nasty'.
