Microsoft plans to reduce its reliance on Nvidia by expanding the use of its proprietary Maia AI accelerators, aiming to make them its primary architecture for running AI models. The company unveiled its third-generation Maia 300 chip on Monday, with production scheduled to begin in 2027 and plans to deploy multiple gigawatts of Maia chips across its data centers. Microsoft expects each rack to contain 96 Maia 300 chips, double the Maia 200 configuration. The new accelerator could process up to seven times more AI tokens per rack and deliver 40% more tokens per megawatt than GPUs, improving computing efficiency and lowering data-center operating costs. CEO Satya Nadella previously said Maia 200 delivered 30% better performance per dollar than the latest hardware in Microsoft’s fleet. The strategy aims to improve margins, secure chip supply and support growing demand across Azure, Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot. $MSFT $NVDA
