Plug Power Stock Slides On $370M Warrant Deal, But Retail Goes Contrarian

Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr reportedly expressed concerns on Wednesday with the central bank’s deregulation proposal, which regulators appointed by President Donald Trump have supported.Speaking at a community banking research conference at the St. Louis Fed, Barr said that the recent capital standards proposal threatens protections for small banks. “These shifts would not make the system safer; they would leave community banks once again exposed to the fallout if the largest players stumble,” Barr said.The Fed governor added that strong banking reforms, including higher capital requirements, tougher liquidity norms, and rigorous stress testing, have helped in safeguarding the U.S. economy. “As community bankers well know, it was not community banks that fueled the 2008 financial crisis — it was the largest, most complex firms whose excessive risk-taking nearly brought down the system,” he said.Big banks have lobbied for a review of the capital requirements after the Biden administration announced a major hike. Critical Metals Stock Soars After Rare Earth Supply Deal With REalloys

However, the analyst adds that any doubts about the Fed cutting the policy rate could result in a sharp near-term pullback in gold prices.Analysts at ING Think underscore the delay in the release of key economic data due to the U.S. government shutdown as a contributing factor in driving up the demand for gold. “Markets are pricing in a quarter-point cut this month, which would further benefit gold, as it doesn’t pay interest. U.S. stocks appear set for a positive opening on Wednesday ahead of the release of the Federal Reserve’s latest minutes as investors look for clues on the central bank’s monetary policy going forward.While Dow Jones futures were up by 0.18% at the time of writing, the S&amp;P 500 futures rose 0.17%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100’s futures gained 0.22%. Dow Futures Edge Up As Wall Street Awaits Fed Minutes: TSLA, EFX, CFLT, PENG Among Stocks To Watch

While Dow Jones futures were up by 0.18% at the time of writing, the S&P 500 futures rose 0.17%.

The U.S. dollar has weathered the government shutdown relatively well and has been broadly rising, with the greenback now rising for three consecutive sessions. In the Asian session, the currency rose 0.33% to 98.91, a level not seen since Aug.11, although it is still down 9% for the year-to-date period.The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), an index that measures the value of the greenback against a basket of six currencies belonging to the country’s major trading partners, was up 0.33% to $98.91 early Wednesday. The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/UUP">Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund (UUP)</a> rose 0.43% in overnight trading, according to Yahoo Finance.The U.S. currency’s revival could be attributed to the decline in rate-cut chatter, as government data releases have been&nbsp;delayed, and some Federal Reserve speakers who made public appearances recently issued hawkish comments. Kansas City Fed’s Jeff Schmid emphasized on Monday the need to remain vigilant about inflation that has remained sticky. His views were echoed by Minneapolis Fed’s Neel Kashkari, who said any drastic rate cuts would stoke inflation.&nbsp;The greenback also received support from geopolitical developments that weighed down on some of its major counterparts. The Japanese yen has depreciated by approximately 3.5% against the dollar this week following the announcement that pro-stimulus leader Sanae Takaichi will be the new leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). While the Japanese stock market welcomed the election, the yen weakened to its lowest since February on concerns about fiscal extravagance.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the political impasse in France, following the resignation of Sébastien Lecornu after serving in office for less than a month, has hurt the euro, the common currency of the 27-nation EU bloc. Lecornu’s resignation was precipitated by his inability to push through austerity measures in parliament. French President Emmanuel Macron is now left with the responsibility of choosing another Prime Minister or dissolving parliament and holding new elections. On a positive note, Lecornu has reportedly accepted a request from Macron to work on a plan for the “stability of the country.”The political instability in Europe’s second-largest economy has sparked concerns about a broader eurozone-wide debt crisis. From a mid-September high of 1.1919 against the dollar, the euro has lost about 2.5% and currently trades around the 1.16 levels.The dollar's strength has come despite a rise in gold to a record high. Uncertainty over the government shutdown persisted, with President Donald Trump considering mass layoffs as a means to rein in spending.&nbsp;The ongoing artificial intelligence (AI) deal news flow and investments will likely provide an offsetting impact. A Bloomberg report, citing people familiar with the matter, stated that&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/nvidia-to-pump-2b-in-equity-into-elon-musks-xai/ch6ETdaR3hD">Nvidia would invest</a> $2 billion in Elon Musk-led AI startup xAI as part of the latter’s latest funding round.&nbsp;Fund manager Louis Navellier shrugged off talks of an AI bubble burst like the one seen in 1999, reasoning that this time around, the players are huge companies with healthy balance sheets and strong cash flow.As of 11 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.14% and 0.19%, respectively, and the Dow futures were up a more modest 0.10%.
