Fed Rate Cut Odds For December Nearly Double After NY Fed’s Williams Signals ‘Room For Further Adjustment’

According to data from the CME FedWatch tool, there is now a 70.9% probability of a 25 basis point rate cut in December, up from 39.1% a day ago.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Williams stated that it’s not possible to precisely measure the impact of trade policy actions on inflation with precision.</li><li>He noted that inflation expectations are well anchored, the labor markets are not creating inflationary pressures, and that wage growth has moderated.</li><li>However, he added that the downside risks to employment have increased, while the upside risks to inflation have eased to an extent.</li></ul>John Williams, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, on Friday stated that President Donald Trump’s tariffs have contributed about 50 to 75 basis points to inflation.In prepared remarks at the Central Bank of Chile Centennial Conference, Santiago, Chile, Williams stated that it’s not possible to precisely measure the impact of trade policy actions on inflation with precision.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Impact Of Trump Tariffs</h2>However, Williams attributed some of the current inflation to the Trump administration’s tariffs.“My estimate is that increased tariffs have contributed about one half to three quarters of a percentage point to the current inflation rate. I do not see any signs of tariffs contributing to second-round or other spillover effects on inflation,” Williams said.He noted that inflation expectations are well anchored, the labor markets are not creating inflationary pressures, and that wage growth has moderated. So I would have thought that they would want to take out a third cut.”The Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed that the U.S. economy added 119,000 jobs in September before the government shutdown, well above expectations of 50,000. However, the unemployment rate also rose to 4.4%, the highest since 2021. In the last few years, Amazon has been closing the gap with Walmart, with its about 20% topline compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Amazon has a hugely profitable cloud unit, which contributed about&nbsp;17% to the company’s topline.&nbsp;In the era of artificial intelligence (AI), Amazon Web Services has become even more pertinent to investors valuing Amazon’s business and its stock. The growth rate at the world’s largest&nbsp;hyperscaler, while below competitors like Microsoft’s Azure and Google Cloud, often determines how Amazon's stock moves quarter over quarter.That said, the key here is also how Amazon has expanded its already dominant position in e-commerce. The company’s revenues from its “North America” and “International” segments, which chiefly comprise e-commerce sales, were $484.03 billion in 2024. That figure increased by 9.6% in 2024, while the year-earlier pace was 11.6%.Bentonville, Arkansas-based&nbsp;Walmart reported $680.9 billion in total revenue for its fiscal year 2025, which ended in January 2025. Reducing e-commerce net sales in the U.S. and international markets, and from Sam’s Club, leaves us with an estimated $560 billion in sales from Walmart’s physical stores.That essentially means Walmart’s sales from its physical stores were higher than Amazon’s online sales, at least till last year. Walmart, however, is pushing the pedal on e-commerce and said its global e-commerce sales grew 27% last quarter.<h2 class="st-heading-2">AMZN vs WMT</h2>For better or worse, investors are buying Walmart shares because of the company’s strong reliance and performance compared to peers amid challenging consumer and economic trends. But for Amazon, its exposure to the consumer retail market is a drag. Bear market blues,” they said. Traders also grappled with the delayed September jobs report.The S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq Composite logged their biggest intraday reversals since April. The S&amp;P swung 237 points before closing near session lows, while the Nasdaq whipsawed more than 1,100 points.The sell-off was broad, with IT, consumer discretionary, industrials, and materials hit hardest. Consumer staples were the lone standout, buoyed by Walmart’s guidance hike. Major ETFs slid as well: QQQ fell 2.37%, SPY 1.52%, IWM 1.85%, and DIA 0.84%.The S&amp;P 500 now sits 5.5% below its Oct. 29 intraday record of 6,920.35. The Nasdaq is down 8% from its 24,019.99 high the same day, while the Dow is 5.5% off its Nov. 12 peak of 48,431.57.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Where’s The Market Headed?</h2>In a post on X, economist David Rosenberg said, “This is probably not a dip you want to buy.” He noted that the S&amp;P 500 took out the 6,550 support flagged by investment strategist Walter Murphy. Thursday’s decline locked in the rally off the April lows as a completed pattern, he said. “A garden-variety retracement of 50% would place the S&amp;P 500 back at the level that it started the year (around 5,900) – more than 10% down from where we are today.”Integrated Financial Strategies Chief Market Strategist Roy Mattox said his firm remains in cash. “Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing while the bears and the bulls fight it out in [the] grand scheme of things," he added.BCA Research’s Peter Berezin, a former Goldman analyst, blamed the market pullback squarely on the AI skepticism. Sharing a chart, he noted that hyperscalers will hold at least $2.5 trillion in AI assets by the end of this decade. “Assuming a depreciation rate of 20%, that would generate $500 billion in annual depreciation expense. Gold futures also slipped. The 10-year U.S. Treasury note yield fell below 4.1% after dropping 2.7 basis points on Thursday, as the rise in the jobless rate and an increase in weekly jobless claims kept rate-cut hopes alive.The U.S. Dollar Index held above the 100 mark, with the greenback rising marginally against most major counterparts.Asian stocks were in a sea of red on Friday, dragged down by Wall Street’s tech-led slump, which deflated the mood. Dow, S&P 500 Futures Tick Higher, But Fear Rules Amid Worst November Since 2008 — Strategists Split On Buying The Dip

The market is heading toward the worst November since the onset of the Great Financial Crisis amid macro uncertainty and AI skepticism, with just four-and-a-half sessions left.

The stock has logged a decline in eight of the last 10 sessions.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Mixed Jobs Data Lowers Rate Cut Hopes</h2>Most risk-on assets, including equities and cryptocurrencies, declined on Thursday following mixed September jobs data that further lowered rate cut expectations. The U.S. economy added 119,000 jobs just before the government shutdown, well above expectations of 50,000. However, the unemployment rate also rose to 4.4%, the highest since 2021.According to CME Group’s FedWatch tool, only 36% traders expect a rate cut after the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting in December, compared with over 98% a month earlier. The purchase was made at an average price of $102,171 per Bitcoin. Strategy, the largest holder of Bitcoin in the world, issues preferred shares to accumulate more Bitcoin by offering investors exposure to Bitcoin without actually owning it.The company’s mNAV, its multiple on net asset value, or the premium in the stock price over the firm’s underlying Bitcoin holdings, stands at 1.2 after dipping below one a few weeks earlier. Investors consider an mNAV of 2 or higher to be a healthy level.Economist Peter Schiff, known for his hawkish stance on cryptocurrencies, said on Thursday that after spending over $48 billion to buy Bitcoin, the firm’s total paper profits stand at less than 17%. “Had Saylor bought just about any other asset, MSTR would have been better off. Plus, if Saylor ever tries to realize this gain, it will vanish,” he said.However, Saylor has remained confident about the firm despite the volatility. He said earlier this week that Strategy is “engineered” to survive an 80-90% drawdown and continue operating. He noted that the company’s leverage remains “extremely robust,” currently at 10 to 15% and trending “toward zero.”“So, I think we’re pretty indestructible,” he said. He also noted that until Bitcoin rises by as little as 1.25% annually, Strategy can maintain its dividend payments indefinitely.
