Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. <ul class="summary-bullets"><li>According to data from the CME FedWatch tool, the probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut in January is now at 14.9%, down from 23% a month ago.&nbsp;</li><li>The probability for a 25 bps cut in March remains relatively high, at 42.5%, compared to 38.5% a month ago.</li><li>According to the Fed’s dot-plot projections, the median estimate for the federal funds rate at the end of 2026 is 3.4%, which is a quarter point lower than the current range of 3.5% and 3.75%.</li></ul>As 2025 draws to a close, investors are trying to decode where the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy is headed next.After holding rates steady for most of 2025 and resisting President Donald Trump’s calls for rate cuts, the central bank ended the year with three consecutive 25 basis point reductions in the policy rate.With the labor market cooling and inflation remaining above the Fed’s long-term target of 2%, markets are lowering their expectations of aggressive cuts in the coming year.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Are Markets Considering?</h2>According to data from the CME FedWatch&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>, the probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut in January is now at 14.9%, down from 23% a month ago.&nbsp;The probability for a 25 bps cut in March remains relatively high, at 42.5%, compared to 38.5% a month ago.However, the odds of the federal funds rate being in the 3% to 3.25% range, which implies a cumulative reduction of 50 bps, are considerably low, at 5.9%. This is down from 8.1% a month ago.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Economist’s Take</h2>Jeremy Siegel, professor emeritus of finance at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, stated last week that cooling inflation gives the Federal Reserve more room to move the policy rate down further. Eventually, he expects additional easing that will take rates closer to the low-3% range.According to the Fed’s dot-plot projections, the median estimate for the federal funds rate at the end of 2026 is 3.4%, which is a quarter point lower than the current range of 3.5% and 3.75%. This points to just one cut in 2026.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Fed’s Pivot</h2>The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) met eight times in 2025 and chose to keep rates unchanged in the first five meetings.The central bank noted in its first five meetings that the labor market conditions were “solid,” but changed its tone in the sixth meeting in September, with the FOMC statement stating that “job gains have slowed this year” in the last three meetings of the year. However, its tone on inflation was consistent throughout the year, with the central bank stating that it remained “somewhat elevated.”Inflation remained above the Fed’s long-term target of 2%, and the central bank expects it to stay above this level throughout 2026 as well as 2027.The Fed also ended its Quantitative Tightening (QT) program on December 1, bringing an end to a multi-year effort to reduce its balance sheet.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Growing Dissent</h2>Dissent among central bank officials has been growing. The first four FOMC meetings saw unanimous agreement among the committee's voting members on the rate policy, but since the fifth meeting, there has been dissent.Notable among the dissenters this year is Fed Governor Stephen Miran, who has voted for a 50 bps cut thrice since being sworn in to the position in September.During the December FOMC meeting, there were three dissenters against the central bank’s monetary policy action — while Miran wanted a larger 50 bps cut, Austan Goolsbee and Jeffrey Schmid wanted no cuts.According to a CNBC&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/10/the-fed-is-the-most-divided-its-been-in-more-than-a-decade.html">report</a>, this is the most divisive the Fed has been in the past six years.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Leadership Change Ahead</h2>Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s term is set to expire in May 2026. President Trump told reporters on Tuesday that he plans to announce his pick for the Fed Chair position sometime in January, after threatening to sue Powell for “gross incompetence,”&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-threatens-sue-feds-powell-will-announce-replacement-next-month-2025-12-29/">according</a> to Reuters.There are two <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/kevin-warsh-fed-chair-kalshi-after-pushback-against-kevin-hassett-trump/cLeJfHqREYv">frontrunners</a> for the Fed Chair role — White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett and former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, with Christopher Waller also in the running.Meanwhile, U.S. equities declined in Wednesday morning’s trade. At the time of writing, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF</a> (SPY), which tracks the S&amp;P 500 index, was down 0.35%; the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (QQQ) fell 0.38%; and the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/DIA">SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust</a> (DIA) declined 0.35%. Despite lingering geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties, the bull market continued to push ahead. It’s the time of the year to take stock of which among the global markets delivered superior returns.&nbsp;U.S. President Donald Trump may have done the chest-thumping for ushering in the golden era of the stock market after he took office for a second time in January. Ironically, Trump upset the markets' rhythm, which had been coming off a robust performance in late 2024, by announcing sweeping tariffs early in the year. The market’s resilience won in the end.&nbsp;While outperforming China’s main stock market gauge, the S&amp;P 500 Index, a measure of the broader U.S. market performance, trailed many other major markets.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">And Crown Goes To….</h2>The best-performing stock market is in a country on the other side of the world. South Korea’s Kospi topped the Class of 2025, and it is a no-brainer as the country is home to some of the biggest tech names, including Samsung, memory chipmaker SK Hynix, and battery maker LG Electronics.The Kospi suffered a setback in December of 2024 when the then-President Yoon Suk Yeol’s sudden declaration of martial law and remained subdued during the first half of the year due to the Trump tariff threat. The market lifted off in the second half, inspired by President Lee Jae Myung’s pro-market agenda and a global AI boom.<h2 class="st-heading-2">How S&amp;P 500 Fared Versus Rest Of Global Markets</h2>The S&amp;P 500 Index fell in the middle of the spectrum among the major global markets in terms of the year’s performance. Corporate profit growth remained strong, helping to offset fears concerning a potential economic slowdown. FactSet estimates that the cumulative profit of S&amp;P 500 companies is set to increase by 8.3% year over year (YoY) in the fourth quarter, marking the 10th consecutive year of earnings growth.The Federal Reserve, probably buckling under political pressure, lowered the Fed funds rate by 25 basis points each, thrice. With Trump promising to install a dovish Fed Chair, replacing incumbent Jerome Powell when his current term as chief expires in May 2026, the market has begun baking in additional cuts.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Brazil Takes Silver</h2>Despite the year’s stellar run, the key market gauge, the Bovespa, is down on a five-year basis. In 2025, the stock defied a hawkish central bank that fought hard to bring inflation below the 5% central bank target, a Barron’s&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/brazil-stock-market-bull-run-president-election-bonds-415b43d1">report</a> stated. The economic growth, however, remained resilient.“What’s driving the bull run this year is the prospect for change in 2026,” said Malcolm Dorson, head of emerging markets strategy at Global X ETFs. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is expected to retire after the elections in&nbsp;October 2026, given the not-so-robust health of the octogenarian.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Hong Kong, Japan Other Standout Asian Markets</h2>Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Japan's Nikkei 225 were among the best-performing Asian markets, gaining about 28% and 27%, respectively. The Japanese market, though, was volatile during the year.&nbsp;Daiju Aoki, UBS SuMi Trust Wealth Management regional chief investment officer, said, “The market is increasingly being driven by politics,” Japan Times&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2025/12/30/markets/market-look-back-2025/">reported</a>. While tariffs initially roiled the market, a resolution to the issue and the change of guard in the political arena helped the market recover nicely. Sanae Takaichi, considered a fiscal dove, won the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership race in October and was later named president.<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Outlook</h2>Most economists and strategists believe the conditions are ripe for the bull market to continue.
