Will US Markets Keep Ripping Higher Despite Iran Volatility? Retail Traders Lean Bullish, Wall Street Not So Much

Kenneth Goh, director of private wealth management at UOB Kay Hian Pte., reportedly told Bloomberg that Friday’s highs were based on the idea that the Iran deal would hold, but it was not a safe assumption.

But a former associate of legendary investor Peter Lynch issued a stark warning as the market highs coincided with an all-time low in American consumer sentiment.“Both happened in the same week. Iran had agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz even as Israel and Lebanon agreed to a temporary ceasefire. Apart from the “happy ending” priced in due to developments in the war, Noble said that the uptick in the “Magnificent Seven” tech stocks also helped push markets higher.“The S&amp;P 500 is trading at all-time highs because 7 mega cap tech stocks (powered by AI narratives) account for nearly half the index's market cap,” he said. The <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MAGS">Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF</a>, which tracks Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Meta (META), Microsoft (MSFT), NVIDIA (NVDA), and Tesla (TSLA), climbed 8.68% higher last week, the most weekly gains in about 11 months.<figure class="image"><img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/koyfin_20260420_084406819_png_7674733f44.webp" alt="koyfin_20260420_084406819.png" width="2400" height="1240"><figcaption>Source: Koyfin</figcaption></figure>“Those stocks run on their own dynamic, independent of anything, including the war in Iran. That's a market being dragged to record highs by a handful of names while the real economy deteriorates underneath,” Noble noted.Meanwhile, the investor highlighted how the broader market was sinking, with software stocks plummeting this year, private credit “imploding,” gas prices surging, and consumer purchasing conditions for big-ticket items falling sharply.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Noble Warns Of Consumer Distress</h2>When markets and consumer sentiment highlight different narratives, “Consumers feel the pain before it shows up in the indices,” Noble said. &nbsp;“In 2007, the S&amp;P 500 hit its record in October. Consumer sentiment had been falling since July 2007. 3 months later, we were in recession.”Meanwhile, the U.S. stock market has reached its most expensive valuation relative to economic output in recorded history, <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/Barchart/status/2045851598791020572?s=20">according</a> to Barchart. The firm added that this time around, it sees NAND pricing trends lasting longer because demand is shifting to data centers and AI inference.BofA noted that NAND pricing trends are sustainable in the medium term, with suppliers being rational in their pricing. The firm added that NAND contract prices are expected to rise by a further 70% to 75% sequentially in the second quarter (Q2) this year, driven by demand from AI and data centers. It also stated that NAND prices are already up by 85% to 90% in the first quarter (Q1).Analysts at Evercore ISI initiated coverage of SanDisk earlier this week, assigning a bull-case price target of $2,600. The firm said SanDisk is well-positioned in one of the most attractive AI infrastructure segments, which is data storage, where demand is surging while supply remains tight.Evercore ISI has an ‘Outperform’ rating on SanDisk.Citi analyst Asiya Merchant also raised the firm’s price target for SanDisk to $980 from $875 while keeping a ‘Buy’ rating on the stock. Merchant highlighted the improving pricing dynamics of storage as well as a solid demand-supply scenario as reasons for the bullish outlook.<h2 class="st-heading-2">SanDisk To Join Nasdaq 100 Next Week</h2>SanDisk is set to join the Nasdaq 100 index starting April 20, 2026, replacing Atlassian Corp. (TEAM).The firm’s inclusion in the index will lead to its stock being added to more funds, which could trigger additional buying by institutions.
