Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. Opendoor also drew fresh attention with the return of its founders to the board, a new CEO hire from Shopify, and frequent&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/opendoor-stock-keeps-retail-traders-buzzing-as-cofounder-ceo-tease-big-q4-reveal-online/chDMvJiR37V">management posts</a> on X touting AI, tokenization, and other growth initiatives. Then, in August, the company launched a&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/go-pro-subscribers-feed-over-125-000-hours-into-ai-training-program/chsHDvIRdjl">major growth initiative</a>: licensing its terabytes of video feed for AI model training. During that period, the stock’s short interest was reportedly very high, leading to a short squeeze as the price rose.Later, in November, the stock ripped more than 50% in just three days — this time fueled by a strong&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/kss-stock-soars-after-turnaround-efforts-lift-profit-forecast/cL52LQkREXr">earnings report</a> and optimism around the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/kohls-traders-just-got-the-ceo-they-wanted-and-the-stocks-weekly-breakout-says-it-all/cLI792uREi3">appointment of a new CEO</a>. For the year, Kohl’s stock is heading for a strong close. But its business, and consequently its stock, have been in decline due to weak sales, losses, and declining consumer demand for highly processed plant-based meats.In the back half of the year, the company&nbsp;underwent a flurry of restructuring moves that created a boom-and-bust cycle in the stock. Notably, Beyond Meat completed a&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/beyond-meat-stock-slides-56-after-early-settlement-of-convertible-notes-offer/ch6SjncR3k8">debt-to-equity conversion</a> in October, which massively diluted its shares and caused them to drop.&nbsp;Over the month and in November, the company’s expanded&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/beyond-meat-stock-set-for-another-sizzling-rally-expanded-walmart-deal/cLG5cLMR3pD">partnership with Walmart</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/beyond-meat-ceo-admits-long-road-to-turnaround-pins-hopes-on-shrinking-debt-and-product-changes-retail-stays-bearish/cLPIVDJRE5f">yet another weak quarterly report</a> sent shares swinging widely. Burry, a GameStop shareholder, had written to the company’s board, urging it to aggressively do buybacks and reduce senior management pay, among other suggestions.In 2021, Gill rallied behind GameStop, sending its stock up multifold.“Burry kept that email private for six years. He posted it today. With the stock back in the low 20s. You can’t make this up,” a user&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/1p8bbqr/michael_burry_just_dropped_the_mother_of_all_gme/">posted</a> on r/Superstonk, a dedicated forum for GME, speculating a big move.Separately, GameStop on Friday unveiled a notably innovative initiative that’s drawing fresh attention from everyday consumers. On Dec. 6, the company is hosting a “Trade Anything Day,” where consumers can bring in almost any physical item and swap it for $5 in store credit.There are some rules: Each customer gets only one item, it must fit inside a 20-by-20-by-20-inch box, and store managers can refuse anything that doesn't meet the&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.gamestop.com/trade-anything-day">guidelines</a>. Social media is&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/search?q=gamestop%20trade%20anything&amp;src=typed_query&amp;f=top">lit up</a> with comments about the promotion.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What’s Working For GME — And What’s Not?</h2>Recently, GameStop has made a bigger push into collectibles, including trading cards, board games, and video game merchandise, and shuttered more physical stores to sharpen its e-commerce focus. The latter is a response to more game sales happening online on platforms such as Amazon.Fans are also upbeat about GameStop’s recently launched platform for trading and storing gaming cards, also known as Power Packs.However, on a&nbsp;broader level, it’s a bleak picture. GameStop’s revenue has shrunk in the last three financial years, although there has been some rebound in the past two quarters.Its Bitcoin play has also failed to deliver the expected upside for GME stock (see chart).
