Newmont Corp.’s (NEM) shares fell over 5.4% in extended trading on Thursday after the gold miner cautioned about a hit to its fourth-quarter free cash flow due to higher costs.The free cash flow outlook also took the shine away from a third-quarter profit beat, aided by higher gold prices and its cost-saving initiatives.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Newmont’s Q4 Cash Flow To Take A Hit From Higher Yanacocha Spending</h2>“Compared to the previous quarter, fourth-quarter free cash flow is expected to be adversely impacted by the continued increase in spending on construction of the Yanacocha water treatment facilities,” the company said in a statement. It is also expected to incur costs related to layoffs during the third quarter.The company posted adjusted third-quarter earnings of $1.71 per share, topping Wall Street’s estimate of $1.45 per share. Its quarterly sales of $5.52 billion also beat estimates of $5.30 billion, according to Fiscal.ai data.Newmont’s average realized gold prices jumped to $3,539 per ounce from $2,518 per ounce a year earlier, aided by the recent rally in bullion prices. The VanEck Gold Miners ETF also tumbled over 9%.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Caused Bullion's Decline?</h2>The plunge in gold prices followed U.S. President Donald Trump's statement on Monday that he expected to reach a fair trade deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, while also downplaying concerns over differences in their views on Taiwan.“The unwind follows a spectacular rally (almost $1,000 in two months) driven by FOMO that pushed gold into extreme overbought territory, leaving it vulnerable to a sharp snap back,” IG analyst Tony Sycamore said.However, on Tuesday, Trump sounded cautious over a trade deal with China. "I think we're going to have a very successful meeting. Certainly, there are a lot of people that are waiting for it," Trump said about his upcoming meeting with Xi in South Korea. "Maybe it won't happen. Things can happen where, for instance, maybe somebody will say, 'I don't want to meet. It's too nasty'. The Fed had lowered interest rates by 25 basis points in the previous meeting.According to CME Group’s FedWatch tool, nearly 96% traders have priced in a 25-basis-point rate cut in the Federal Open Market Committee meeting later this month. Bullion and other precious metals tend to thrive in a low-interest-rate environment as investors use them as a hedge against inflation.The dollar index, which compares the greenback with a basket of currencies, also slipped 0.2% making the dollar-priced bullion attractive for overseas investors. Spot silver also rose 2.9% to $52.9 per ounce.Separately, tensions between the U.S. and China have risen again after President Donald Trump said the U.S. might halt its cooking oil trade with China due to Beijing’s reluctance to purchase American soybeans.“We are considering terminating business with China having to do with Cooking Oil, and other elements of Trade, as retribution. However, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent assured that a scheduled meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, is still expected to take place in South Korea later this month.Silver’s Record RunSilver prices soared past $51.20 per ounce, the highest level since U.S. billionaires Hunt brothers attempted to squeeze the market. So far this year, silver has outperformed gold, with over 83% gains compared to gold's 56% surge.&nbsp;Silver’s recent leap has been driven by a supply shortage in London, as producers fail to keep up with demand. London stocks were also diminished earlier this year when gold and silver bars were rushed to the U.S. in anticipation of tariffs imposed by Trump.“Beyond safe-haven demand, diversification from the U.S. dollar and rate cut expectations, silver prices benefit from industrial demand, including solar panels and wind turbines. Silver Rips Amid Short Squeeze, Gold Prices Hit Fresh High Amid Rate Cut Hopes

Gold prices hit another record high on Monday as renewed trade tensions between the U.S. and China brought in safe-haven flows into bullion.Spot gold prices rose 1.4% to $4,073.26 per ounce at 3.44 a.m. ET. It had jumped as high as $4,078.18 per ounce earlier in the session. The bullion has already posted eight consecutive weeks of gains. The U.S. consumer price index report, initially scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed to Oct. 24 as thousands of federal workers remain at home. Gold Hits Fresh All-Time Highs As US-China Trade Tensions Spike

Spot gold prices rose 1.4% to $4,073.26 per ounce at 3.44 a.m. ET. It had jumped as high as $4,078.18 per ounce earlier in the session.

The SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), the largest exchange-traded fund (ETF) that invests directly in physical gold, logged the highest one-day dollar volume on Thursday, the most since the Greek debt crisis in 2013.According to Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, the ETF logged $12.5 billion in dollar volume, even higher than some of the so-called "Magnificent Seven" group of tech companies. Yet the bullion remains on course for the eighth straight week of gains, banking on political uncertainties as the U.S. government shutdown entered its second week.According to ING Commodities data, investors have been adding gold ETFs at a rapid pace. Total gold held by ETFs rose 17% this year, the highest level since September 2022. Investor holdings in gold ETFs generally rise when gold prices rise, and vice versa.The research firm noted that there is still room for further additions, as the current total remains shy of the 2020 peak, and additional inflows could push gold even higher.According to a Reuters News report, Alex Ebkarian, COO at Allegiance Gold, said that gold is in a secular bull market for the next five years. "That ($4,000) psychological threshold triggered profit-taking among speculators and short-term traders, but long-term investors should see it as confirmation that confidence in paper money is eroding," he noted.Gold prices have surged over 50% this year, with their recent surge aided by the debasement trade, where investors flock to safe-haven investments due to political instability.On Thursday, private surveys showed that the U.S. weekly jobless claims rose last week, likely due to the government shutdown.
