Trump's EV Moves: Tax Credits Ending, Fines Gone - Winners and Losers

Trump's rollback of EV tax credits and fuel economy fines is likely to benefit GM and Ford but will work unfavorably for Tesla, Rivian and Lucid.

Sales of electric vehicles from Tesla Inc. (TSLA), General Motors Co. (GM), Ford Motor Co. (F), and other players in the U.S. could be cut in half as President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” ends federal EV credits later in September, according to an automobile industry expert.According to a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ev-armageddon-tesla-gm-ford-ev-sales-will-be-cut-in-half-when-tax-credit-expires-analyst-says-124602947.html">report</a> by Yahoo Finance citing inputs from iSeeCars.com analyst Karl Brauer, although EV sales could rise in the third quarter (Q3) due to a potential rush from buyers ahead of the September 30 deadline for claiming EV tax credits, they would see a steep fall off once the deadline kicks in.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/TSLA">Tesla’s shares</a> gained 4% in Wednesday’s opening trade, while&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GM">GM’s shares</a> edged up by 0.03% and&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/F">Ford’s shares</a> were down 0.55% at the time of writing. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits around Tesla and Ford trended in the ‘bearish’ territory, while users felt ‘neutral’ about GM.“I think then ... we're going to see a pretty big drop. I could see US [market share] dropping well below 4% immediately after the September 30 incentive goes away and maybe settling in the beginning of 2026, around 4%,” Brauer added. Tesla, GM, Other EV Sales To Tumble By 50% As Trump Ends Federal EV Credits Later This Month, Says Expert: Report

According to auto analyst Karl Brauer, EV sales could rise in the third quarter due to a potential rush to claim federal tax credits, but there could be a steep decline after the deadline kicks in.

Lucid Group shares dropped more than 10% on Tuesday as the electric carmaker completed a 1-for-10 reverse stock split that contributed to investor concerns already stoked by a reduced production forecast and bigger quarterly losses.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/lucid-stock-gets-price-target-cut-from-stifel-as-it-gears-up-for-reverse-stock-split/chtTSAXRdNK">The split</a>, which was approved by shareholders in August, resulted in the company having approximately 307 million shares outstanding, down from more than 3 billion. The number of authorized shares was reduced to 1.5 billion.Lucid now expects to produce 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles in 2022, down from its previous goal of 20,000.&nbsp;Interim Chief Executive Marc Winterhoff told&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/05/lucid-lcid-results-q2-2025.html">CNBC</a> that the company was still targeting the upper end of that range, but said supply chain constraints have impacted the ramp-up of the Gravity SUV.&nbsp;Deliveries in the second quarter (Q2) increased 38% from the same period a year earlier to 3,309 vehicles, but still fell short of Wall Street's forecasts.The company’s net loss widened to $855 million, or roughly $0.28 a share, from a loss of $790 million, or $0.34 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted loss was about $0.24 per share.&nbsp;Operating costs climbed 7.5% to $1.06 billion, while Lucid ended the quarter with $4.86 billion in cash and liquidity.To support growth, Lucid has been leaning on partnerships. Uber is investing $300 million as part of a deal with Lucid and self-driving startup Nuro to roll out more than 20,000 autonomous Gravity SUVs over six years.&nbsp;On the company’s Q2 earnings call, Winterhoff called the tie-up “a strategic alignment” that validates Lucid’s platform beyond direct car sales.The company is also trying to soften the blow from policy changes. Lucid common stock is expected to begin trading on a split-adjusted basis on Sept. 2, 2025.Retail sentiment around <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/LCID">LCID stock</a> fell from ‘bullish’ to ‘neutral’ territory over the past 24 hours, while message volume fell from ‘normal’ to ‘low’ levels. The brokerage also awaits clarity on Gravity sales and the rollout of the midsize vehicle, as per TheFly.The Air and Gravity models are premium segment vehicles. The midsize SUV is expected to be priced lower, around $50,000, thereby expanding the company’s total addressable market.
