Perpetual derivatives allow traders to maintain long or short positions in an asset.&nbsp;The launch is the first time a major global equity index has been made available as an officially licensed perpetual contract on-chain.&nbsp;“This collaboration expands access and utility of our flagship benchmarks within digital trading environments,” said Cameron Drinkwater, the Chief Product &amp; Operations Officer at S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices.The S&amp;P 500 accounts for more than $1 trillion in daily trading volume across instruments like futures, options, ETFs, and structured products, and sits at the center of a global trading ecosystem.&nbsp;This product brought that exposure into a 24/7 blockchain-based market.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bringing the S&amp;P 500 To 24/7 Blockchain Markets</h2>Trade[XYZ], which operates real-world asset markets via perpetual derivatives on Hyperliquid, said the launch aligned with its goal of bringing traditional financial markets on-chain.&nbsp;“The S&amp;P 500 is the most widely tracked equity index on earth… Through our collaboration, it is now accessible 24/7 on Hyperliquid,” said Collins Belton, the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of Trade[XYZ]’s parent company.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/hyperliquid">Hyperliquid</a> was up over 2% in the last 24 hours. According to the Commerce Department, overall retail purchases, unadjusted for inflation, showed little change following a 0.6% gain in November.&nbsp;Eight of 13 retail sectors posted declines, including clothing stores, furniture outlets, and auto dealerships, while spending rose at building materials and sporting goods stores.Data released Tuesday also showed labor costs rising more slowly. The employment cost index increased 0.7% in the fourth quarter, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Market Selloff Over AI Fears&nbsp;</h2>Shares of many established software and technology companies fell sharply last week as traders grew increasingly uneasy about the risk that advances in artificial intelligence could erode demand for traditional subscription software.The selloff intensified after Anthropic’s Claude Cowork launch. Cowork includes open-source tools that let AI systems handle entire tasks on their own.&nbsp;Following this,&nbsp;hedge funds aggressively increased their short positions in U.S. equities as well. Dow Hits Record High Despite Cautious Economic Data

At the time of writing, the Dow Jones Industrial Average index traded 0.5% higher, at 50,430 points, and the S&P 500 index edged up to 6,966 points.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Spot gold jumped 6% lower at $4,939 an ounce by 4:42 PM ET.</li><li>Major technology shares were trading in the red, including most of the “Magnificent Seven” names like Microsoft and Meta Platforms.</li><li>Bitcoin also took a beating as it fell more than 4% and reached its lowest levels since November 2024.</li></ul>U.S. equities fell on Tuesday after investors dumped major technology stocks as they turned focus on safer assets.&nbsp;The S&amp;P 500 dropped 0.84% to settle at 6,917.81, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.43% lower to 23,255.19. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 166.67 points, or 0.34%, to 49,240.99.Major technology shares were trading in the red, including most of the “Magnificent Seven” names like Microsoft and Meta Platforms that were down 3% and 2%, respectively.&nbsp;Nvidia stock also slumped, with the artificial intelligence heavyweight dropping 4%. Meanwhile, software stocks like ServiceNow and Salesforce fell 7% each.&nbsp;Other than technology stocks, bitcoin also took a beating as it fell more than 4% and reached its lowest levels since November 2024. The drop is also weighed by significant outflows in bitcoin ETFs over the past two weeks, where investors took out billions.&nbsp;Spot gold jumped 6% lower at $4,939 an ounce by 4:42 PM ET. Gold futures for February deliveries was higher nearly 7% to $4,977.90 an ounce.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Stocks In Focus</h2>PayPal (PYPL): PayPal reported Q4 revenue of $8.68 billion, falling short of analyst expectations of $8.79 billion, according to Stocktwits data.&nbsp;Palantir (PLTR): Has reported its best annualized growth rate on record (70%) and a massive Q4 revenue beat of $1.41 billion.Amazon (AMZN): As it gears up to report earnings this week, news reports suggest that it may eliminate 2,200 more jobs as it continues to lean into operational efficiency.&nbsp;Tesla (TSLA): It has introduced a new all-wheel-drive Model Y variant in the U.S., priced at $41,990. But investors are also assessing the $1.25 trillion mega-merger between SpaceX and xAI.Novo Nordisk (NVO): The company on Tuesday said that it sees fiscal 2026 adjusted sales down 5% to 13% as it gears up to face pricing headwinds and a competitive market.&nbsp;U.S. equities were mixed in extended hours of trading on Tuesday. S&P 500 Hits All Time Intraday High Ahead Of Fed’s First Policy Meeting Of 2026 This Week

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>President Trump stated he is exploring a one-year 10% credit card interest rate cap, calling 20 to 30% rates unjust and promoting customer affordability.</li><li>The suggestion comes as U.S. credit card balances jumped from $1.21 trillion to $1.23 trillion and household debt surged $197 billion in Q3 2025, mostly due to mortgages and school loans.</li><li>Billionaire Bill Ackman warned that rate restrictions might force lenders to cut credit availability for millions, and prior congressional initiatives to cap rates failed.</li></ul>On Friday, President Donald Trump said that he was considering imposing a one-year term of 10% cap on credit card interest rates, arguing that the current rates of 20 to 30% are unfair to American consumers.&nbsp;President Trump framed the proposal as a measure to make credit cards more affordable and criticised credit card companies for overcharging Americans, adding that the policy would take effect on January 20.While many praised the President on the limit placed on credit cards, Pershing Square Capital Management CEO Bill Ackman&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/BillAckman/status/2009812485302264099?s=20">pointed</a> out that “without being able to charge rates sufficient to cover losses and generate an adequate return on equity, credit card lenders will cancel cards for millions of consumers.” Ackman called it “a mistake” and proposed that “regulatory changes that enable new entrants could lead to a reduction in rates.”&nbsp;Previously, Congress had tried to consider legislation to cap interest rates on credit cards, but none made it into law.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Record US Consumer Debt Adds Pressure on Households</h2>This comes at a time when credit card debts hit a record high in 2025. From the second to the third quarter, credit card debts have skyrocketed from $1.21 trillion to $1.23 trillion, according to the&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.newyorkfed.org/newsevents/news/research/2025/20251105">Federal Bank of New York.</a> Household debt in the United States rose by $197 billion in the third quarter of 2025, continuing a trend that is putting it on course to surpass levels last reached before the financial crisis, according to the latest quarterly report on household debt and credit.&nbsp;The bank also states that most of the increase was driven by mortgage balances, which rose $137 billion to $13.07 trillion as activity related to mortgages increased, with $512 billion in new mortgage loans issued during the quarter. Donald Trump wants to put a 10% cap on interest rates on credit cards, a move that had previously been taken up by Congress but had never made into law.

These next seven days, starting tomorrow, are higher more than 77% of times. You look at all seven day combinations out there, none are more likely to be higher,” Detrick&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/us-equities-could-hit-new-highs-santa-claus-rally-says-ryan-detrick/cLeppGTREHd">said</a> on Tuesday.Jeremy Siegel, professor emeritus of finance at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, on Tuesday&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/wharton-jeremy-siegel-2026-good-year-for-risk-assets/cLeplcAREuj">stated</a> that 2026 has the ingredients needed to be a good year for risk assets.However, for his prediction to materialize, Siegel stated that Washington will have to avoid self-inflicted disruptions and that productivity continues to hold up.“One underappreciated tailwind into year-end is productivity: if productivity holds up while nominal demand cools, inflation can fall without the economy needing to break. That’s the best possible mix for both equities and longer-duration assets,” he said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What If Santa Fails To Show Up?</h2>But what happens when a Santa Claus rally fails to materialize? According to a report by Seeking Alpha citing Ari H. Wald, head of technical analysis at Oppenheimer, the subsequent one or two quarters tend to be below average for equities.“Since 1928, the S&amp;P 500 has averaged a 1% loss in the subsequent three months following a negative [Santa Claus rally] vs. an average 2.6% gain following a positive [one]. So, either AI stocks are all that, but if that’s the case, they’re going to take a bunch of jobs away, which means the consumption could falter next year. So, you know, I worry about the idea that we’re just pricing in the best of everything right now,” she said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Street Estimates</h2>Meanwhile, other firms are more bullish on next year’s market performance. Citigroup expects the S&amp;P 500 to end 2026 at 7,700, an implied gain of 12.7% from Friday’s close, citing strong corporate earnings and AI infrastructure build-out, as per a report from Reuters.Another CNBC report said that Oppenheimer sees the S&amp;P 500 surge 18% from Friday’s close to end 2026 at 8,100, while Wolfe Research predicts the index will climb to 7,600, an implied gain of 11%. Fundstrat Global Advisors’ Managing Partner Tom Lee sees the index reaching 7,700 by the end of next year. <ul class="summary-bullets"><li>BIS noted that both the S&amp;P 500 and gold prices have surged in “lockstep” throughout the recent market rally.</li><li>Since dipping in April this year after President Donald Trump announced the “Liberation Day” tariffs, the S&amp;P 500 has surged 38% so far, while gold prices have gained more than 41%.</li><li>On Monday, Oppenheimer’s Chief Investment Strategist John Stoltzfus said he expects the S&amp;P 500 to reach 8,100 by the end of 2026.</li></ul>The S&amp;P 500 index and gold are at risk of being in a bubble, according to the latest&nbsp;report by the Bank of International Settlements (BIS).The BIS pointed out that the S&amp;P 500 index and gold have exhibited “explosive behavior” jointly for the first time in the last 50 years.“A widely used statistical test to detect the explosiveness of a price process suggests that both the S&amp;P 500 and the price of gold have entered explosive territory in recent months,” BIS said.It noted that explosive prices are associated with low future returns.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Surging In Lockstep</h2>BIS noted that both the S&amp;P 500 and gold prices have surged in “lockstep” throughout the recent market rally.Since dipping in April this year after President Donald Trump announced the “Liberation Day” tariffs, the S&amp;P 500 index has surged 38% so far. In the same period, spot gold prices have gained more than 41%.Earlier on Monday, Oppenheimer’s Chief Investment Strategist John Stoltzfus said he expects the S&amp;P 500 to reach 8,100 by the end of 2026, up 18% from current levels.<h2 class="st-heading-2">BIS’ Warning</h2>The central bank body warned that a sharp, swift correction typically follows a bubble burst, adding that the growing influence of retail investors is a sign of a developing bubble.“Historically, the prices of U.S. equities and gold have breached the explosive behaviour threshold at different times. This was often followed by a significant correction, such as in 1980 for gold (after having surged during the Great Inflation) and the burst of the dotcom bubble for US equities,” it stated in a report.Analysts at ING Think stated in a note on Monday that they expect the yellow metal to continue to shine in 2026. They expect gold prices to average $4,325 per troy ounce in 2026, implying an upside of more than 3% from current levels.Meanwhile, U.S. equities edged lower in Monday’s opening trade. At the time of writing, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/SPY">SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF</a> (SPY), which tracks the S&amp;P 500 index, was down by 0.17%.
