META, SNAP, GOOG Stocks Fall After New York Mandates Mental Health Warnings On Social Media Platforms

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation rose about 16% year on year to roughly $454 million in the quarter. The company also supposedly posted year-on-year revenue growth in the second quarter.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Advertising Still Dominates Revenue</h2>Advertising has long been X’s primary source of income, but the company has been trying to broaden its revenue base through paid subscriptions and data-licensing agreements. Even with recent growth, X remains well below its pre-takeover scale. Before Musk’s purchase, Twitter generated $1.18 billion in revenue in the second quarter of 2022, its last report as a publicly listed company.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Push Toward An ‘Everything App’</h2>In November,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/elon-musk-says-x-money-launching-soon-after-x-chat-messaging-overhaul/cLP9JkNREEP">Musk said X Money would be launching soon</a>, signalling the next phase of his effort to turn X into a broad communications and financial platform. The Commission found that X had employed deceptive practices to allow users to obtain a “verified” status. It said that this affected the users' ability to make free and informed decisions about the authenticity of the accounts and the content they interact with.“While the DSA does not mandate user verification, it clearly prohibits online platforms from falsely claiming that users have been verified, when no such verification took place,” the Commission said.The EC also slammed X for a lack of transparency with respect to its advertisement repository, stating that there is a deficiency of critical information, such as the content and topic of the advertisement, as well as the legal entity paying for it.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What’s Next For X?</h2>X now has 60 days to respond to the EC on how it plans to end the infringement of the DSA’s rules related to the deceptive use of blue checkmarks on the platform.The social media platform has also been given 90 days to submit an action plan listing the measures X intends to take to address the infringement of DSA rules related to the advertising repository and access to public data for researchers.“Failure to comply with the non-compliance decision may lead to periodic penalty payments. Elon Musk’s X Corp. (XCorp) has reportedly reached a settlement in a $128 million lawsuit brought by former top executives of Twitter, although the terms of the settlement have not been disclosed yet.According to a Reuters&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/musks-x-settles-ex-twitter-executives-128-million-severance-pay-lawsuit-2025-10-08/">report</a>, the settlement was first announced in a filing in a San Francisco federal court last week. A federal judge reportedly rejected Elon Musk’s bid to move a lawsuit brought forward by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to Texas concerning an alleged late disclosure of his stake in Twitter Inc.“The Court takes Mr. Musk’s convenience seriously, but it also notes that Mr. Musk has considerable means and spends at least forty percent of his time outside his chosen forum,” US District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan wrote in an order Thursday in Washington, according to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-10-02/musk-loses-bid-to-move-sec-suit-over-twitter-stake-to-texas">report</a>.Twitter has been subsequently renamed to X and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of xAI. The SEC sued Musk in January, just days before President Donald Trump took office, and more than two years after Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion.In its lawsuit, the SEC alleged that Musk failed to meet the deadline set by the regulator to disclose that he had accumulated at least a 5% stake in Twitter. It stated that this delay allowed Musk to acquire Twitter shares&nbsp;at a discount, costing its shareholders more than $150 million.However, Musk sought a dismissal of the lawsuit in August, with his attorneys&nbsp;arguing that it was a waste of the court’s time and taxpayer resources. “The SEC does not allege that Mr. Musk acted intentionally, deliberately, willfully, or even recklessly... Rather, the SEC alleges that Mr. Musk late-filed a single beneficial ownership form three years ago, and fully corrected any alleged error immediately upon its discovery. Microsoft, Meta, X, and the Chinese AI industry, led by Alibaba, are investing heavily to compete with the ChatGPT-maker.Meta has ramped up its AI hiring spree, dangling multi-million dollar packages to lure top talent to its new Superintelligence team.
