U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit China for a state visit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. Xi is expected to make a return visit to Washington at a later time.
"I'm pleased to announce that President Trump's meeting and long-awaited meeting with President Xi in China will now take place in Beijing on May 14th and 15th," Leavitt said at a press briefing.
Details
Leavitt explained that the visit was initially planned for next week but was postponed due to the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, and Xi agreed that rescheduling was necessary.
Trump last visited China in 2017, which was the most recent trip to the country by a U.S. president. This upcoming visit will mark the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since their October talks in South Korea, where they agreed on a trade truce.
This meeting will also be the first face-to-face encounter for both leaders since the U.S. Supreme Court’s February decision to overturn the country-by-country tariffs that were imposed by Trump and his administration.
Meeting Amid Tensions
Trade tensions have persisted between the U.S. and China, and the ongoing conflict in Iran has further strained their relationship. Since Iran is a key crude oil supplier to China, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has heightened pressure on China’s oil needs.
Officials from the two countries, including US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, met in Paris in March, a gathering intended to lay the groundwork for the summit, a report from Bloomberg said.
