Back in 2011, long before “crypto Twitter”, NFTs, or VC-backed chains existed, users of the BitcoinTalk forum came up with a new currency - not to launch a network, but to make fun of btc.... and so: The first memecoin/memecurrency was born.  On May 23, 2011, a Something Awful poster cracked, “Has anyone called them buttcoins yet?”. It was sophomoric and perfect. Within weeks the gag metastasized into Buttcoin.org, a parody blog that described a “peer to peer butt” economy while cataloging mining fiascos, exchange blowups, and MLM-adjacent “innovations”.

Ethereum is a global, open-source platform for decentralized applications. In other words, it is a decentralized blockchain platform that enables developers to build and deploy smart contracts and applications without central authority control. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily functions as digital currency, Ethereum operates as a programmable global computer where developers can create any type of decentralized service.   The platform hosts over $14 billion in DeFi applications with hundreds of thousands of active users across financial protocols, NFT marketplaces, and gaming platforms. Its transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 reduced energy consumption by over 99%, addressing environmental concerns while strengthening network security.  The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The asset is increasingly adopted by traditional institutions, with publicly traded companies adding ETH to corporate treasuries to generate staking yields while maintaining blockchain exposure, and in 2024, the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETFs, allowing traditional investors to gain exposure through conventional brokerage accounts.  Ethereum's roadmap focuses on dramatically increasing transaction capacity to over 100,000 per second, reducing confirmation times, and enhancing decentralization while maintaining security against future threats like quantum computing.

The system selects validators based on how much ADA they've staked and for how long, then rewards them with additional ADA for their participation. This approach uses far less energy than traditional mining while keeping the network secure. The platform also features a two-layer design that separates basic payment transactions from smart contract operations, allowing each function to be optimized independently for better performance.   ADA holders can earn staking rewards by locking up their tokens to help secure the network, vote on proposed changes to the platform, and use ADA for international money transfers with lower fees than traditional services. Hoskinson leads Input Output Global (IOG), the technology company that builds and maintains Cardano's core software. The ecosystem operates through three organizations: IOG handles technical development, the Cardano Foundation promotes adoption and standardization, and Emurgo helps businesses integrate blockchain technology into their operations. This structure distributes responsibilities across multiple groups rather than concentrating control in a single entity. Alaska Air Group, Inc. (ALK) said on Wednesday it has completed the acquisition of Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. (HA) after securing an agreement with the Department of Transportation (DoT). Shares of Alaska Air were down nearly 2%.The DoT had said Tuesday that Alaska and Hawaiian are required to protect the value of rewards, maintain existing service on key Hawaiian routes to the continental United States and inter-island, and preserve support for rural service.Other terms included ensuring competitive access at the Honolulu hub airport, guarantee fee-free family seating and alternative compensation for controllable disruptions, and lower costs for military families. &nbsp;The deal comes as a big relief to both the firms given the fact that proposed airline mergers have faced tough opposition from the Biden administration.Both the airlines will now begin the work to secure a single operating certificate with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which will allow them to operate as a single carrier with an integrated passenger service system.According to the DoT, this is the first time it is requiring airlines to agree to binding, enforceable public-interest protections in order to permit the airlines to close their merger.In the interim, the firms will continue to operate as separate carriers with no immediate changes to operations and will maintain separate websites, reservation systems and loyalty programs until later in the integration process, Alaska Air said. The company also stated that it will preserve and grow union-represented jobs in Hawai’i.The companies expect run-rate synergies of unto $235 million and high single-digit accretion to earnings within the first two years and mid-teens return on invested capital (ROIC) by year three. &nbsp;With the conclusion of the acquisition, Hawaiian Airlines' stock will be delisted and cease trading on the NASDAQ on Sept. 18. United Airlines (UAL) said on Friday it will offer free inflight Wi-Fi to its passengers using SpaceX’s Starlink services under the industry's largest agreement of its kind. Shares of the airline were trading nearly 3% higher on Friday morning.Starlink is a satellite constellation using a low earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more. It delivers internet access around the world, including over oceans, polar regions and other remote locations previously unreachable by traditional cell or Wi-Fi signals.United Airlines expects to have Starlink on all of its 1,000+ planes over the next several years. Testing will commence in early 2025 and the first passenger flights are expected later that year, it said.The announcement comes at a time when airlines are trying to attract more high-paying business class customers by offering various perks.
