At 4%, Zions&#39;s exposure is miniscule compared to peers (having said that, some of Zions&#39;s peers like Valley National $VLY and UMB Financial $UMBF are even lower at 0-1%). Remember, Zions was trading at $54 before all this. It went all the way down to $46.9 before returning to $50 at Friday-end. That $50 btw is equal to the FY2025E P/E multiple of 9.6x prevailing on Thursday adjusted for the 5% EPS decline (30c) from the collateral fraud committed by the California NDFIs. So we came back in a flash.  And no, it shouldn&#39;t happen again.

$ZION But why isn&#39;t this a big concern for Zions investors? Well, here&#39;s the jig. First, that $60MM default amounts to 30c or 5% of Zions&#39;s annual EPS. The mean EPS estimate is $5.64 for FY 2025: 95% of that is $5.37. Prior to Thursday, the FY 2025E P/E multiple was 9.6x. You multiply $5.37 times the same multiple equals $51.55. Well, by Friday&#39;s end, we were back 97% in aftermarket trading at $50.  In other words, the sell-off was overdone. That&#39;s because the market is now treating the NDFI problem as an isolated incident at least for Zions. As Morgan Stanley points out, the NDFI exposure for Zions is only 4%, the lowest among its peers. Although the figure doesn&#39;t denote the actual risk inherent in NDFI loans, this puts into perspective the exposure at least for Zions. The lightning won&#39;t strike again -- perhaps at another regional bank but not at Zions.
