MACRO NEWS
Powell's Last Stand Ends in Chaos 🔥

Jerome Powell walked out of his final press conference Wednesday as a fractured committee, a Senate-Commitee-confirmed incoming chair with a reform agenda, and a legal sword still hanging over the institution all competed for the same headline. Two-year yields jumped 11bps to ~3.9%, the biggest Fed-day move since January 2022.

The RIP: Fed held rates at 3.5%-3.75% for the third straight meeting, 8-4 vote. Three dissenters (Hammack, Kashkari, Logan) voted against the easing the wording bias in the statement. Miran dissented the other way, wanted a -25bps cut. S&P 500 fell -0.19% on the decision. Rate-cut bets for 2025 are effectively gone. Odds of a rate hike by April 2027 priced at roughly 1-in-3.

"The number who favor a more neutral language in the statement has increased," Jerome Powell, Fed Chair, said Wednesday at his final presser as chair. He was quick to respond to questions about his departure, "I won't be a shadow chair,” he said. “There's only ever one chair of the Federal Reserve Board.”

Powell spent eight years as the consensus builder and closed out with the most dissents of his entire tenure, the widest divide in votes since 1992. The contradiction isn't subtle: Warsh has openly called for "regime change" at the Fed and the committee he's inheriting just showed it won't roll over.

"Today's vote confirms that incoming Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will lead a committee that may not be aligned with his policy views," Scott Pike, Senior Portfolio Manager at Income Research +Management, told Bloomberg.

It’s not just that Miran wants to cut now, its that three other members wanted to make it less visible that the board is waiting for the right time to cut. Instead, they wanted to keep it neutral, that the future path of monetary policy is as likely a hike as a cut. Warsh is headed to an open floor confirmation vote near the week of May 11, with Powell’s term expiring May 15.
