State-owned electricity producer <a class="stockpage_articles" href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/market/stocks/ntpc-share-price/NTP/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NTPC</a> plans to set up nuclear power projects with 700 MW, 1,000 MW and 1,600 MW capacity across various locations in the country, a senior company official said. 
 
NTPC is targeting a 30% share (30 GW) of India's proposed 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047. 
 
Industry estimates indicate that a 1-GW nuclear plant requires an investment of ₹15,000–20,000 crore and typically takes at least three years from concept to commissioning. 
 
Sharing updates on the company's nuclear expansion plans, the official said NTPC is currently evaluating land options in several states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, among others. 
 
"The capacities of the nuclear projects would be 700 MW, 1,000 MW and 1,600 MW," said the official who is involved in the company's strategic planning. 
 
NTPC will proceed with nuclear development in states identified and approved by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). 
 
"The AERB will approve the sites, and NTPC will accordingly implement the projects," the official added. 
 
The company has also begun efforts on the raw material front and is exploring the acquisition of overseas uranium assets. 
 
Uranium, a naturally occurring metallic element, is the primary fuel used in nuclear reactors. 
 
NTPC has already signed a draft agreement with Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) for joint techno-commercial due diligence of uranium assets abroad. 
 
On the technology front, NTPC plans to deploy indigenously developed pressurised heavy-water reactors (PHWRs) for the 700 MW and 1,000 MW plants. 
 
"For the 1,600 MW nuclear projects, we may look for technology collaborations," the official noted. 
 
Established in 1975 as a thermal power generator, <a class="stockpage_articles" href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/market/stocks/ntpc-share-price/NTP/">NTPC Ltd</a> has steadily expanded and diversified into new energy sources. 
 
According to the NTPC website, the company currently has an installed capacity of 84,848 MW at group-level, spanning coal, gas/liquid fuel, hydro and solar power. 
 
At present, NTPC is setting up a nuclear project in a joint venture (JV) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) in Rajasthan at an investment of about ₹42,000 crore. 
 
While NTPC has a 49% stake in ASHVINI (Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd), NPCIL has the majority shareholding of 51%. 
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the 4x700 MW Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP) being set up by ASHVINI at Banswara in September.

Stateowned electricity producer NTPC plans to set up nuclear power projects with 700 MW, 1,000 MW and 1,600 MW capacity across various locations in the country, a senior company official said.

As the air quality in Delhi-NCR plunges into the “severe” category, prompting the enforcement of GRAP Stage III, construction sites across the region have once again fallen silent. While the curbs are aimed at protecting public health, they have triggered fresh concerns across India’s real estate and infrastructure sectors—sectors that collectively employ lakhs and anchor one of the largest economic ecosystems in North India. 
 
Developers, industry bodies, contractors and large project owners agree that public health must come first. But they argue for a more nuanced, data-driven and site-specific approach, pointing to the massive social and economic implications of blanket construction bans. 
 
Livelihoods at the Centre of the Storm 
 
Vijay Harsh Jha, founder and CEO of VS Realtors, captures the immediate human impact of GRAP-III. 
 
“While pollution control measures are absolutely necessary to safeguard public health, we must also recognise that the livelihoods of millions of workers depend on construction activities,” he says. “The construction ban not only halts real estate projects but also leaves thousands of daily-wage labourers without income or security.” 
 
According to him, repeated shutdowns—during monsoon and pollution season—disrupt delivery cycles, escalate costs and create anxiety among homebuyers. “We need a more balanced and sustainable approach—one that protects health, livelihoods and project timelines together,” he adds. 
 
Echoing this concern, Parveen Jain, President of NAREDCO, warns that an indiscriminate halt “would have immediate economic consequences,” especially for unskilled workers dependent on daily wages. Construction, he notes, is a key driver of economic momentum and employment. 
 
He advocates allowing RERA-registered, low-dust sites to continue operations under strict monitoring. “Every site already has real-time pollution sensors transmitting data to CPCB. Sites consistently recording levels below GRAP-III thresholds should be allowed to operate,” he says, arguing for a fairness-based, site-specific regulatory model. 
 
Developers Support GRAP, Stress Need for Balance 
 
Despite operational disruptions, most developers emphasise that the intent of GRAP-III is vital. 
 
Pradeep Aggarwal, Founder &amp; Chairman of Signature Global (India) Ltd, says the company “fully supports” the government’s decision. “While temporary restrictions may cause short-term adjustments, such measures are important for ensuring environmental sustainability,” he says. Signature Global has deployed advanced dust-mitigation systems, covering of raw materials and on-site greenery across its sites. 
 
Ashok Kapur, Chairman of Krishna Group and Krisumi Corporation, says they abide by GRAP norms “in letter and spirit.” But he points out that studies show construction is not the top pollutant. “A blanket ban disrupts timelines, affects homebuyers and impacts the most vulnerable—the labour workforce. There is an urgent need for a more balanced, sustainable solution to this recurring challenge.” 
 
Sahil Agarwal, CEO of Nimbus Realty, also calls Stage 3 a “necessary intervention” but underlines the “immediate impact on timelines and productivity”. He says the industry must now respond with smarter sequencing, modular construction and early-stage planning to minimise disruptions. “Quality and compliance must go hand in hand,” he adds. 
 
Sustainability Taking Centre Stage as Industry Evolves 
 
A notable shift runs through all industry voices: GRAP-III, despite its disruptions, has accelerated the sector’s transition to cleaner construction. 
 
“GRAP reinforces what the market was already gravitating towards—cleaner sites, greener materials, sustainable technologies and healthier environments,” says Vaibhav Kumar Shivhare, Senior VP (Projects &amp; Contracts) at Experion Developers. 
 
He lists fly-ash brickwork, crushed sand, wastewater recycling, efficient HVAC systems, low-VOC paints, performance glass and IGBC/GRIHA-certified projects as the new norm. Tools like BIM, AI-assisted design, off-site fabrication and lean construction have helped maintain efficiency even under restrictions. 
 
“By 2030, green real estate will steer and define the industry’s leadership,” he predicts. 
 
Manoj Gaur, CMD of Gaurs Group, agrees that GRAP has pushed the industry toward “smarter, cleaner and more accountable construction practices.” Dust-mitigation systems, anti-smog guns, cleaner equipment and site management protocols that were once add-ons are now standard across projects. “These measures allow us to maintain construction quality while upholding environmental responsibility,” he says. 
 
Technology-Driven Adaptation Becomes Industry Strategy 
 
The push for technological adoption is also becoming more pronounced as developers find new ways to keep projects on track while meeting environmental norms. 
 
Robin Mangla, President of M3M India, says GRAP-III is “a crucial reminder of our collective responsibility toward cleaner air and sustainable urban growth.” Developers, he notes, are increasingly turning to dust-control systems, green cover planning and cleaner practices. “Such regulations encourage more responsible development and push the industry towards technology-driven solutions,” he says. 
 
Sanjay Dutt, MD and CEO of Tata Realty &amp; Infrastructure Ltd, views GRAP-III as both a challenge and an opportunity. “These measures are necessary to protect public health. The path forward lies in proactive adaptation.” 
 
He highlights how leading developers are deploying real-time air quality monitoring, advanced dust suppression systems and cleaner construction methodologies. “The regulations are being viewed as catalysts for innovation rather than barriers,” he says. 
 
Call for Flexibility and Practical Support 
 
While backing the intent, developers are unanimous in asking for supportive mechanisms to ensure that environmental compliance does not lead to project distress. 
 
Kushagr Ansal, Director of Ansal Housing, says the temporary halt “impacts timelines, labour deployment and material movement,” but also encourages cleaner construction. He emphasises coordinated steps between authorities and industry for balancing the environment with delivery requirements. 
 
Ashish Bhutani, CEO of Bhutani Group, adds that while environmental responsibility is paramount, “the industry also needs practical flexibility to maintain timelines.” Supportive steps from regulators like RERA—particularly “reasonable extensions”—would help developers stay compliant without jeopardising delivery schedules. 
 
A Turning Point for Construction in NCR 
 
The imposition of GRAP-III has once again underscored Delhi-NCR’s struggle to balance two complex priorities—public health and economic activity. 
 
But this year, the industry’s response also shows a deeper shift: sustainability is no longer just compliance; it is becoming a competitive and operational imperative. 
 
Whether regulators adopt site-specific norms or continue blanket restrictions, the real estate sector appears to be recalibrating itself for a future defined by greener, smarter and more responsible construction.

GRAP-III halts construction across Delhi-NCR: Developers urge on need for 'balance'

Developers, industry bodies, contractors and large project owners agree that public health must come first. But they argue for a more nuanced, data-driven and site-specific approach, pointing to the massive social and economic implications of blanket construction bans.

Gravity reduces blood flow to the brain, and this reduced circulation may contribute to brain ageing. This is a new scientific hypothesis unveiled by Eternal CEO Deepinder Goyal's Continue, a human longevity-focused venture. 
 
This hypothesis places Earth’s gravity at the centre of human ageing, claiming that gravity’s constant pull on blood circulation, especially blood flow to the brain, may be an overlooked factor that gradually triggers age-related decline. 
 
The basic idea behind this is that because the brain sits above the heart, spending most of our lives upright means gravity constantly pulls blood away from it. 
 
In this posture, gravity reduces cerebral blood flow (CBF) by as much as 17%. Continue argues that over decades, this reduced blood supply could gradually weaken two regions of the brain that regulate critical bodily functions: the hypothalamus, which manages hormones and metabolism, and the brainstem, which governs autonomic functions. Their decline, the researchers say, may set off multiple age-related processes. 
 
CBF is already known to decline 20–40% between the ages of 20 and 80. But Continue claims this may not be a passive effect of age. Instead, the hypothesis proposes that gravity’s impact on circulation could be a root cause of this reduction—a link that has not been examined in existing scientific literature. 
 
This is not the first time gravity has been linked to ageing. Previous studies on gravity and ageing have largely come from space research. NASA and other space science programmes have documented how microgravity, the near-weightless environment astronauts experience, affects the body. These studies show that microgravity leads to bone loss, muscle atrophy, cardiovascular changes and immune system shifts, many of which resemble accelerated ageing. However, these findings stop at the physiological effects of removing gravity. 
 
Almost no research has examined how Earth’s own 1G gravity affects humans over a lifetime, particularly in terms of brain perfusion, Continue says. 
 
"Studies so far have focused on microgravity and its effects on ageing. Almost nothing has examined how Earth’s own gravity affects humans over a lifetime. This is the first time a connection has been drawn between gravity, age-related reductions in brain blood flow, and systemic ageing," a spokesperson told CNBC-TV18. 
 
The team also cites patterns in nature to support the hypothesis. Species that spend long periods inverted, such as bats, show unusually long lifespans relative to body size. 
 
"Many other lifespan outliers, like sloths and flamingos, also spend long periods in positions where their brains lie below their hearts. Gravity may 
be the unexplored variable behind these species-level longevity exceptions," the hypothesis notes. 
 
In humans, yoga traditions have long promoted inverted postures, and population data indicate shorter individuals tend to live longer, which the company added may be linked to the reduced distance the heart must pump blood against gravity. 
 
Sharing some excerpts from the note, Deepinder Goyal took to X, saying the hypothesis opens a world of questions and suggested that several long-standing health phenomena may need to be reconsidered through a vascular lens. 
 
He asked whether the benefits of exercise could simply be due to temporarily improving the body’s “hydraulic system,” whether Alzheimer’s may involve a vascular component that unfolds too slowly to notice. 
 
He also questioned if mood disorders might be linked to gravity-dependent blood flow to the midbrain and whether practices like meditation, breathwork and yoga derive many of their benefits from improved cerebral perfusion.

How Continue arrived at its findings 
 
The organisation conducted preliminary studies using a new experimental device developed in-house. The device continuously measures total blood flow to the brain and was used to record the effects of different postures and activities. 
 
The Continue spokesperson explained, “We developed an experimental device using advanced health sensors that estimate total blood flow to the brain. We used it to continuously measure brain flow across different interventions like inversions. The device took two years to build and has been benchmarked against gold-standard CBF measurements.” 
 
Using this tool, Continue found that Yoga-based active inversions increased CBF by 13.3%, and passive inversions using commercial inversion tables increased CBF by 20.2%. 
 
It also found that a simple legs-up-the-wall pose improved CBF slightly more than active inversions. 
 
In a six-week study, daily passive inversion for 10 minutes led to a 7% increase in average daily brain blood flow, which the company equates to roughly 10 “younger” years of brain perfusion. 
 
For context, active inversions involve holding the body upside down using muscular effort, while passive inversions use external support, like an inversion table, so the body hangs inverted without engaging the muscles. 
 
The team emphasises that this work is early and does not claim gravity is the only cause of ageing. Rather, they argue it may be one of the most significant contributors that science has not yet explored.

Continue Research says it is in the process of commissioning further scientific work to test and validate the hypothesis across labs worldwide. 
 
The spokesperson told CNBC-TV18 that Continue Research is already working with scientists to test, refine, and even challenge the Gravity Ageing Hypothesis. 
 
"We are using our $25 million fund to actively commission studies that generate empirical evidence for the hypothesis," the spokesperson added. 
 
The organisation describes its work as open-source and has invited researchers globally to collaborate, test the hypothesis independently, or attempt to disprove it.

As the Nifty nears 26,000 again, Nilesh Shah, MD of Kotak Mahindra AMC, shared his views on market sentiment, global investor appetite, asset allocation and India’s overheated IPO pipeline on CNBC-TV18’s Editors Roundtable. 
 
Shah believes the recent political outcome provides stability, but says the real focus now shifts to the India–US tariff deal, which could unlock foreign buying. During his recent visit to the US, he saw strong curiosity about India but little immediate deployment. “Everyone was interested in listening about India, but no one was willing to cut the cheque immediately,” he said. A tariff deal, he added, could act as a trigger. 
 
For domestic investors, Shah reiterated the importance of balanced allocation. Reflecting the positioning in Kotak’s Multi Asset Allocation Fund, he said the mix of 55% equity, 20% precious metals and the rest in debt remains suitable for an average investor. 
 
He continues to remain positive on both gold and silver, driven largely by central bank purchases. But he cautioned against chasing momentum: “Don’t chase FOMO… open reports to figure out what central banks are doing.”

Start Small 
 
On mutual fund flows, Shah expects strength to continue despite higher redemptions during the festive season. With millions of new investors entering markets, he sees both penetration and expansion opportunities ahead. 
 
The primary market boom, however, is stretching analysts and demanding caution. Shah noted that while some companies are exciting, others are overpriced. 
 
Thanks to AI tools, fund houses are able to analyse DRHPs faster, but selection discipline remains crucial. “If you like business and pricing is expensive, start small,” he advised. 
 
Overall, Shah remains constructive on India but reminds investors to moderate return expectations, given historically low inflation levels.

India still a long-term growth story, says Kotak’s Nilesh Shah as markets eye tariff deal

In a major boost to Andhra Pradesh’s digital infrastructure ambitions, Anant Raj Limited has announced a substantial expansion of its data centre footprint with a fresh investment commitment of ₹4,500 crore. 
 
The company’s wholly owned subsidiary, Anant Raj Cloud Private Limited (ARCPL), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) to develop new data centre facilities and an integrated IT Park in the state. 
 
The MoU was signed on November 14, 2025, in the presence of Nara Lokesh, the Minister for Information Technology, Electronics &amp; Communications, Andhra Pradesh Government, underscoring the state’s focus on attracting high-value investments in the cloud and data services sector. 
 
Under the agreement, ARCPL will execute the ₹4,500-crore investment in two phases to build advanced data centre infrastructure and cloud services capacity. 
 
APEDB will facilitate coordination with government departments to ensure smooth implementation and timely clearances. The project is poised to significantly strengthen the state’s digital ecosystem, which has emerged as a priority area in Andhra Pradesh’s industrial and technology roadmap. 
 
The development is also expected to generate major employment opportunities—about 8,500 direct and 7,500 indirect jobs—positioning it as one of the largest technology-linked job creation initiatives announced in the state in recent years. 
 
The expansion in Andhra Pradesh comes over and above Anant Raj’s 307 MW of data centre capacity currently under development across its campuses. 
 
The company presently operates 28 MW of IT load across Manesar and Panchkula, and is targeting a scale-up to 307 MW by FY32, supported by a $2.1 billion capex plan. By FY28, the Group expects to reach an installed IT load capacity of nearly 117 MW across Manesar, Panchkula, and Rai, claims Anant Raj in a statement. 
 
Anant Raj has been steadily building its presence in India’s digital infrastructure market. 
 
Last year, in June 2024, the company partnered with Orange Business, the French IT and telecom services provider, to deliver managed cloud services in India—an alliance that is expected to complement the upcoming Andhra Pradesh facilities, the developer said. 
 
Established in 1969, Anant Raj has delivered 9.96 million sq. ft. of residential and commercial developments and holds approximately 320 acres of debt-free land in Delhi-NCR, providing strategic backing for its long-term digital and real estate expansion plans. 
 
For the first half of FY26, the company reported revenue of ₹1,223.20 crore and profit after tax of ₹264.08 crore, reaffirming its strong financial footing as it accelerates its data centre growth strategy.

Anant Raj to invest ₹4,500 crore in Andhra Pradesh for new data centre, IT park

Disney and YouTube TV reached a new deal to bring channels like ABC and ESPN back to the Google-owned livestreaming platform on Friday, ending a blackout for customers that dragged on for over two weeks. 
 
“As part of the new deal, Disney’s full suite of networks and stations—including ESPN and ABC — have already begun to be restored to YouTube TV subscribers,” The Walt Disney Co. said in a statement. 
 
YouTube TV also confirmed the return of Disney content on its platform, noting that subscribers should see channels back “over the course of the day.” It apologised for the disruption and thanked customers for their “patience as we negotiated on their behalf.” 
 
Disney content went dark on YouTube TV the night of Oct. 30 after the two sides failed to reach a new licensing deal. In the days that followed, YouTube TV subscribers were left without Disney channels on the platform — notably disrupting coverage of top college football matchups and professional sports games, as well as news and entertainment programming. 
 
Beyond ESPN and ABC, other Disney-owned content removed from YouTube TV during the impasse included channels like NatGeo, FX, Freeform, SEC Network, ACC Network and more.

When talks broke down last month, YouTube TV said Disney was proposing costly terms that would lead to higher prices for and fewer choices for its subscribers. It accused Disney of using the blackout as a negotiating tactic — claiming the manoeuvre also benefited Disney’s own streaming products like Hulu + Live TV and Fubo. 
 
Disney, meanwhile, said that YouTube TV had refused to pay fair rates for its channels. The California entertainment giant also accused Google of “using its market dominance to eliminate competition." And executives blasted the platform for pulling content “prior to the midnight expiration” of their deal in late October. 
 
Both sides also publicly sparred over negotiations and content available leading up to the Nov. 4 elections across the US. 
 
By the time Disney's channels returned to YouTube TV, Google's streamer said it had “reached an agreement with Disney that preserves the value of our service for our subscribers and future flexibility in our offers.” Disney executives maintained that the deal reflected the company's “continued commitment to delivering exceptional entertainment and evolving with how audiences choose to watch.” 
 
The two-week blackout is among a growing list of licensing disputes seen in the streaming world today, particularly as competition grows over hosting live content. And consumers often pay the price when negotiations between companies break down. 
 
The showdown between Disney and YouTube was not their first. YouTube TV subscribers lost access to all Disney content after 2021 contract talks broke down, but that disruption lasted less than two days. 
 
YouTube TV has removed other content from its platform after the expiration of agreements. Spanish-language broadcaster Univision has been unavailable on YouTube TV since Sept. 30, for example. Parent company TelevisaUnivision decried Google's move, saying it would strip “millions of Hispanic viewers of the Spanish-language news, sports, and entertainment they rely on every day,” and called on the platform to reverse course. 
 
YouTube TV’s base subscription plan costs $82.99 per month — which, beyond Disney content, currently includes live TV offerings from networks like NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS and more. The platform previously said it would give subscribers a $20 credit; its dispute with Disney lasted “an extended period of time"—which it reportedly allowed customers to start claiming on Nov. 9. 
 
Disney also doles out live TV through both traditional broadcasting and its own lineup of streaming platforms. ESPN launched its own streamer earlier this year, starting at $29.99 a month. And other Disney content can be found on platforms like Hulu, Disney+ and Fubo. Disney currently allows people to bundle ESPN along with Hulu and Disney+ for $35.99 a month — or $29.99 a month for the first year.

Shares of IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd. will be in focus on Monday, November 17, after IRB Infrastructure Trust, the private InvIT sponsored by the company, emerged as the selected bidder and received a Letter of Award (LoA) from NHAI for the TOT-17 bundle. 
 
The project covers a 366.096-km stretch comprising the Lucknow-Ayodhya-Gorakhpur section of NH-27 (km 15.400 to km 137.970 and km 136.759 to km 252.860) and the Lucknow-Sultanpur section of NH-731 (km 90.370 to km 217.795) in Uttar Pradesh. 
 
The Trust will pay an upfront bid-concession fee of ₹9,270 crore to NHAI and will operate tolling, operations and maintenance (O&amp;M) for a 20-year concession period. 
 
Tariff revision is set at a fixed 3% annually plus 40% of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI). 
 
With this award, the Trust's asset portfolio is set to increase by about 20% to ₹65,000 crore. IRB Infrastructure Developers will act as project manager for the project. 
 
Chairman and Managing Director Virendra D Mhaiskar called the win "pivotal" given the corridor's importance for religious tourism, adding that it places the platform at a "42% market share in the TOT space". 
 
He said it "underscores the growing confidence of long-term private capital in India's national highway monetisation framework". 
 
Shares of IRB Infrastructure closed 1.53% higher on Friday at ₹43. The stock is down 28% so far in 2025.

IRB Infrastructure shares in focus as arm bags ₹9,270 crore NHAI project

IRB Infrastructure Trust will pay a bid-concession fee of ₹9,270 crore to NHAI and will operate tolling, operations and maintenance (O&M) for a 20-year concession period.

Pharma major Alembic Pharmaceuticals on Saturday, November 15, announced that it has received final approval from the US Food &amp; Drug Administration (USFDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA). 
 
The approval is for Diltiazem Hydrochloride Tablets USP in 30 mg, 60 mg, 90 mg, and 120 mg strengths. 
 
Diltiazem hydrochloride tablets are used to treat high blood pressure and angina. 
 
The approved ANDA is therapeutically equivalent to the reference listed drug (RLD) Cardizem Tablets, 30 mg, 60 mg, 90 mg, and 120 mg, of Bausch Health US, LLC. Diltiazem hydrochloride tablets are indicated for the management of chronic stable angina and angina caused by coronary artery spasm. 
 
Alembic now holds a cumulative total of 230 ANDA approvals from the USFDA, including 210 final approvals and 20 tentative approvals. 
 
Shares of Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd. settled 1.28% lower on Friday at ₹904.20. The stock has declined 14% so far in 2025.

The finance ministry has asked hospitals and insurance companies to take measures such as expediting the onboarding on National Health Claims Exchange, devising standardised treatment protocols, common empanelment norms, seamless cashless claims processing etc. to make healthcare affordable and accessible. 
 
Financial Services Secretary M Nagaraju on Thursday chaired a meeting of representatives of leading insurers, hospitals, General Insurance Council and Association of Healthcare Providers (India) to discuss the issue of medical inflation and rising premium costs, a statement issued by the finance ministry said on Friday. 
 
During the meeting held on Thursday, it said, the secretary emphasised having standardised hospital empanelment norms across all insurers would ensure consistent cashless access for policyholders, streamline the service terms, improve operational procedures and reduce administrative burden on hospitals. 
 
He stressed that the insurance companies should ensure that the policy holders are provided with the highest standards of service and better turnaround time especially during hospitalisation process and while providing approvals for settlement of claims. 
 
During the meeting he also advised that while medical inflation is interconnected with various cost drivers, greater collaboration between hospitals and insurers through cost control and standardization is necessary to bring transparency and efficiency to ensure better value for health insurance policyholders.

Finance ministry pushes hospitals, insurers for faster cashless claims and standardised protocols

The finance ministry’s review with major insurers and hospital groups underscored the need for tighter cost controls and smoother coordination to counter rising healthcare expenses. Officials highlighted that streamlined empanelment norms and quicker claim-processing mechanisms could significantly enhance policyholders’ experience while easing operational pressures on providers.

Marking 40 years of Kotak Mahindra Bank, Founder Uday Kotak reflects on how a 26-year-old with modest capital, a contrarian vision, and an early partnership with Anand Mahindra built one of India’s most trusted financial institutions long before the word “startup” entered the country’s business vocabulary. 
 
In 1985, India was still a heavily regulated financial system. “Banking was 97% state-owned. Interest rates were fixed — borrowers paid 17% while depositors earned just 6%,” he recalled. SMEs supplying to large corporations struggled to raise funds even at those high rates. Kotak spotted the inefficiency and built his first business around solving it. 
 
“We started by doing bill discounting. The arbitrage banks enjoyed was 11%, so we said let’s give that benefit to consumers,” he explained. Kotak’s firm financed SMEs at 16% and offered individuals 12% returns to rediscount those bills. It was a win-win that helped small businesses unlock working capital at more competitive rates. “That was the first open game that enabled us to grow in 1985–86,” he said. 
 
It was during this period that Kotak met Anand Mahindra, then freshly returned from Harvard and working at Mahindra Ugine Steel. Kotak pitched a financing scheme that would give Mahindra’s suppliers immediate liquidity at lower rates. The model impressed Mahindra, who soon became the company’s first external investor. 
 
“We started with a total of ₹30 lakh. I borrowed money and put in ₹13.5 lakh. Anand Mahindra put in ₹4.5 lakh. Friends chipped in the rest. That was our starting capital,” Kotak said. “In many ways, Anand Mahindra became our first venture capitalist.” 
 
The partnership also shaped the company’s enduring identity. Kotak insisted on carrying both names—Kotak and Mahindra—on the signboard, drawing inspiration from global financial giants. “Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch… all were family names. Putting our name gave customers confidence. It meant we were putting our reputation on the line.” 
 
Even as a founder-led institution, Kotak consciously built a culture of “professional entrepreneurship.” He believed that long-term success required combining entrepreneurial risk-taking with process discipline. “Many entrepreneurs struggle to move to professionalism, and many professionals lack an entrepreneurial mindset. Our belief was to blend the two,” he said. 
 
This philosophy paved the way for bold moves over the decades—from capital markets partnerships with Goldman Sachs, to car finance innovations that outpaced multinationals, to expansions into mutual funds, insurance and ultimately, banking. 
 
Though the early years were marked by constrained resources and a tightly controlled financial environment, Kotak considers those constraints a hidden advantage. “India in 1985 was on the cusp of change. At some level, we were lucky to be at the right place at the right time,” he reflected. 
 
Four decades later, the startup that began on a ₹30 lakh shoestring has transformed into one of India’s largest and most trusted financial institutions. And for Kotak, the core belief remains unchanged: building trust by putting one’s name—and reputation—on the line. 
 
Below is the excerpt of the interview. 
 
Q: I want to start by talking to you about this 40-year journey that you are marking and I want to go back to your 26-year-old self and the audacity of hope, the audacity of ambition, what was it that made you believe that you could take this idea forward and build and institution with it. 
 
Kotak: We were a startup at Kotak long before startup got formalised as a structure in the financial markets. And we were on relatively small shoe string budgets. Raising capital was not easy, but there was hope and aspiration of an India on the verge of change. Therefore 1985 was the time when India was on the cusp of really being different. At some level we were lucky to be at the right place at the right time. 
 
Q: But getting this started – from NBFC to eventually getting the first bank licence for an NBFC in India. If I were to ask you today to map out the most significant milestones – the milestones that really stand out in your mind as being not just memorable but also impactful in turning the journey to where you are today, what would those be? 
 
Kotak: First, is the time of when we started. Banking was 97% state owned. There was a concept of borrowers not being able to raise more than ₹5 crore of debt. Rate of interest was fixed by the RBI for all borrowers at 17% and depositors got around 6%. So, here was a marketplace where small borrowers, small companies supplying goods to large well-known companies like Tata’s and Mahindra’s found it difficult to fund themselves even at 17%. 
 
So, we started our lives as doing bill discounting where the rate of arbitrage which banks enjoyed which was 11%, we said let us give it to the consumers and customers and built this business. So, we started giving bill financing to SME and small business customers at 16% who used to supply to large well-known companies and went to individuals to rediscount these bills and gave them 12% instead of 6%. So, 6% to 17%, we made it competitive at 12% to 16% and funded a lot of small and medium businesses who had problems of cash flow supplying to large buyers. That was the first relatively open game which enabled us to grow our business in 1985-1986. 
 
That was the time I met Anand Mahindra. He was just back from Harvard and into his company Mahindra Ugine Steel Company. He was designated General Manager Commercial and I gave the scheme to Anand that we could provide him financing at competitive rates so that his suppliers can get funded. That really worked. Anand became the shareholder of the company and the rest is history. 
 
Q: In many ways, you were a startup and he ended up being the first venture capitalist to come onboard? 
 
Kotak: Absolutely. We started with a total of ₹30 lakhs capital, I borrowed some money and put in a ₹13.5 lakh. Anand also put in around ₹4.5 lakhs and then we had friends and others who chipped in a little bit and we started this with ₹30 lakhs capital. 
 
Q: The name Kotak Mahindra – that was your decision, right? You wanted both names to be there on the signboard essentially. 
 
Kotak: There is a little bit of history to that. When I read books while growing up, it was about some of the leading financial institutions in the world and the names were Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, all of whom were family names started by founders who said we must put our name onto the companies name to give confidence of trust for all the customers and investors in the company. Therefore, putting our name on the line was part of a belief that we are putting on the line our names to be able to give trust and confidence to all stakeholders.
