  • The company stated that the test showcased its ability to engage only the validated targets, among other safety features.
  • This validation directly supported a subsequent agreement between the Department of War and the FAA that clears LOCUST for domestic operational deployment, according to the company.

Shares of AeroVironment Inc. (AVAV) rose over 3% on Wednesday after its anti-drone laser system successfully achieved its targets at White Sands Missile Range in a coordinated test with the Pentagon and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Results Of AVAV’s Laser Test

In March, AeroVironment demonstrated its LOCUST high-energy laser system, engaging both stationary and airborne drone targets within the U.S. national airspace.

The company stated that the test showcased its ability to engage only the validated targets, among other safety features. The testing also ensured that there were no adverse impacts on civilian aircraft during controlled evaluation scenarios.

This validation directly supported a subsequent agreement between the Department of War (DOW) and the FAA that clears LOCUST for domestic operational deployment, AeroVironment stated.

"This is a defining moment for directed energy and for the future of homeland defense," said John Garrity, Vice President for Directed Energy Systems at AeroVironment.

Garrity also added that the system has the ability to perform safely and effectively in the most complex airspace environment in the world, and this result rolls out the transition of directed energy from experimentation to operational deployment.

FAA Greenlights AVAV’s High-Energy Laser System

The FAA administrator Bryan Bedford stated that after careful consideration and data-based safety risk assessment, the FAA has determined that AeroVironment’s system does not represent an increased risk to the flying public.

Bedford also added that the FAA will continue to work with its partners to ensure the safety of the National Airspace System as it addresses the upcoming drone threats.

AVAV’s Prototype Agreement With Pentagon

Earlier this week, AeroVironment bagged an award from the U.S. Army to develop small, portable weapons for quick battlefield use.

The agreement, announced Monday, focuses on adding the Switchblade 400 to a military upgrade program. The goal is to create fast, accurate, and easy-to-move strike systems for use in difficult battlefield conditions.

The Switchblade 400 is a medium-range, man-portable loitering munition designed for anti-armor missions. According to the company, it supports the Army’s goal of shortening the sensor-to-shooter timeline by allowing individual soldiers to detect, identify, and engage targets through a unified digital network.
