AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) Chief Executive Officer said on Thursday that the firm plans to be the key enabler of space-based cellular broadband connectivity following the announcement of a possible joint venture between U.S.-based telecom giants to provide satellite-based technology services to their customers.
“AST SpaceMobile is happy to see how the industry is preparing to enable space-based cellular broadband connectivity to every American,” said Abel Avellan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at AST SpaceMobile.
At the time of writing, AST SpaceMobile shares traded over 4% on Thursday.
The announced joint venture aims to share spectrum, create unified technical standards, and enable seamless connectivity between terrestrial networks and satellite coverage — all using D2D communications that allow smartphones to connect directly to satellites without specialized hardware.
The joint venture also aims to nearly eliminate dead zones in the U.S. and provide redundant connectivity during natural calamities.
Following the joint venture announcement, Avellen stated that AST SpaceMobile plans to be a key enabler of this transformation as the company continues to grow its global network in low Earth orbit and expand available spectrum to its network.
AST SpaceMobile stated that its largest-ever phased arrays stationed in the low Earth orbit aids its cellular broadband network and can connect directly with smartphones, without the need of any specialised device.
The firm further noted that it has showcased its ability to reach peak data speeds of about 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) from space to standard mobile devices. Its next-generation satellites are expected to improve that performance for connecting consumers, enterprises, first responders, and governments with broadband networks.
The company stated its network is designed to function across about 1,150 MHz of mobile network operator partners' low-and mid-band tunable spectrum, plus its own licensed L-band spectrum and S-band priority rights, globally.
It also added that it is 95% vertically integrated with all the major manufacturing processes, taking under the U.S. control in Texas. It has over 500,000 square feet of manufacturing and operations facilities, the company added.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment surrounding the stock remained in the ‘bullish’ zone, while message volume reduced to ‘high’ from ‘extremely high’ in the past 24 hours.
Shares of AST SpaceMobile have declined by over 6% so far this year.
