Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. Apple Reportedly Discusses Acquiring Mistral And Perplexity, But Remains Wary Of Big Deals

According to The Information, investment bankers pitched Apple on large AI deals this summer, but the company’s lukewarm response hinted at its reluctance toward major acquisitions.

Nikkei, Inc., the publisher of Japan's largest business newspaper and owner of the UK's Financial Times, said on Tuesday it has sued Perplexity&nbsp;AI in a Tokyo court and sought damages of 2.2 billion yen ($14.97 million) for copying and distributing its content without permission.The Asahi Shimbun Co., one of the oldest general news newspapers in the country, filed an identical suit on Tuesday, following a similar move by Japan's largest newspaper by circulation, the Yomiuri Shimbun.Complaints by Nikkei and the Asahi Shimbun, which also seek an injunction, state that Perplexity bypassed technical safeguards against content use and accessed their servers to gather articles.The AI company then created and disseminated summaries in breach of Japan's Copyright Act, and hurt the companies' commercial interests. In some cases, Perplexity's summarized articles were inaccurate, damaging the credibility of the publishers.Claims for copyright infringement are not new for Perplexity and the industry leader, OpenAI. In the home market, Perlexity is arguing its case in a lawsuit brought against it by Dow Jones, a financial news powerhouse, while The New York Times has sued the operator of ChatGPT.To mitigate, Perplexity has <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/perplexity-publishers-revenue-share-ai-searches/chssFa1Rd1Z">reportedly</a> offered to share its revenue with some publishers, according to a Bloomberg report on Monday. Japan’s Nikkei, Asahi Sue Perplexity AI For Nearly $15M Over Copyright Breach

Perplexity AI Inc. has reportedly offered news publishers a share in the revenue it generates from AI searches, amid concerns from outlets that&nbsp;features like these are eating into their web traffic and thereby, income.According to a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-25/perplexity-to-let-publishers-share-in-revenue-from-ai-searches">report</a> by Bloomberg, Perplexity has set aside $42.5 million to share with publishers as part of this program.“AI is helping to create a better internet, but publishers still need to get paid. So we think this is actually the right solution, and we're happy to make adjustments along the way,” said Perplexity’s co-founder and CEO, Aravind Srinivas, according to the report.According to the terms of Perplexity’s new AI search revenue sharing program, publishers will be able to earn money when their content appears in search queries in the startup’s Comet web browser, when Comet’s AI assistant uses this content to complete tasks, or when publishers receive traffic through the browser, the report said.The firm said it will pay for this program through the revenue it generates from Comet Plus, which is a new subscription option in the Comet web browser.&nbsp; Users will have to pay $5 a month to get a curated set of content from publishers who are a part of Perplexity’s new AI search revenue-sharing program, which is similar to Apple Inc.’s News+ service, according to Srinivas.However, while Apple shares with publishers only 50% of the revenue it generates through Apple News+, Perplexity will share 80%, according to the report.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/PERPLEXITY">Perplexity</a> is not a publicly listed entity currently. Perplexity To Offer Publishers Share In Revenue From AI Searches: Report

According to a Bloomberg report, Perplexity has set aside $42.5 million to share with publishers as part of this program.

OpenAI on Tuesday announced its cheapest ChatGPT subscription plan yet, starting with a rollout in India, according to a company blog post.The effort is meant to attract more users in India, the world's most populous country, and already ChatGPT's&nbsp;second-largest&nbsp;market.The new ChatGPT Go plan is priced at 399 rupees ($4.57) a month. That compares to the $20-a-month ChatGPT Plus, the most affordable plan earlier.The move echoes a similar strategy by streaming giant Netflix, which introduced a cheaper plan for mobile-only use, initially in India before expanding to other markets.Announcing the launch on the social media platform X, Vice President and head of the ChatGPT app Nick Turley <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/nickaturley/status/1957613818902892985">said</a> ChatGPT Go offers users 10 times higher message limits, image generation, and file uploads, and twice the memory compared to the free version."Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! The bid to own Google's Chrome browser might turn into a three-way contest.In an investor note following a Wall Street Journal report that Perplexity extended an unsolicited $34.5 billion offer to buy Chrome, RBC Capital Markets stated that OpenAI could comfortably place a higher bid should Google put the browser up for sale.Chrome is critical to ramping distribution for horizontal GenAI applications, and thus, OpenAI would potentially be prepared to pay significantly more for it in an auction scenario, the research firm said.The developments come as the U.S. Justice Department is pressuring Google to divest Chrome as one of the remedies to address its monopolistic position in the Internet search market, as deemed by a U.S. district court in August last year.RBC said the judge is expected to rule on the remedies for Google this month. OpenAI May Outbid Perplexity’s $34.5B Offer For Chrome If Google Puts Browser On The Market: Analyst 

The U.S. Justice Department is pressuring Google to divest Chrome as part of its remedies to address Google’s monopolistic position in the Search market.

In a bold move against Google’s (GOOG/GOOGL) search dominance, artificial-intelligence firm Perplexity AI reportedly made a $34.5 billion bid for the Chrome browser on Tuesday.According to a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/perplexity-makes-longshot-34-5-billion-offer-for-chrome-5ddb7a22">report</a> by The Wall Street Journal, the proposed purchase price is nearly twice Perplexity’s $18 billion valuation and is fully financed by major venture-capital investors. It noted that while estimates of Chrome’s enterprise value vary, recent estimates have ranged from $20 billion to $50 billion.Google-parent&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/GOOG">Alphabet’s stock</a> rose more than 1% in midday trade. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits around the tech giant remained in ‘bearish’ territory over the past day. Meanwhile, retail sentiment around&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/PERPLEXITY">Perplexity AI</a> was in the ‘neutral’ zone.In a letter to CEO Sundar Pichai, Perplexity said its bid for Chrome was “designed to satisfy an antitrust remedy in the highest public interest by placing Chrome with a capable, independent operator,” according to the report.&nbsp;The company added that, if the deal went through, it would maintain and support Chromium and keep Google as the default search engine, while still allowing users to change settings. Chromium is the open-source project behind Chrome and other browsers.Perplexity’s move comes as U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/google-doj-trial-government-suggests-forward-looking-fixes-to-limit-google-s-ai-usage-for-online-search/chQiAZ3RbQF">weighs</a> whether to order Google to sell Chrome to weaken its grip on web search. Mehta found last year that Google had illegally monopolized the search market and is due to rule later this month on measures to boost competition.The offer may be intended to show the court there’s an immediate buyer for Chrome if a sale is ordered. Google has pushed back against the idea, with Pichai&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.courthousenews.com/google-warns-of-data-security-risks-if-chrome-is-sold-off/">warning</a> that it would harm the company’s business, slow investment, and create security threats. Perplexity Wants Chrome, Reportedly Offers $34.5B To Buy It From Google

According to The Wall Street Journal, the proposed purchase price of Chrome is nearly twice Perplexity’s $18 billion valuation and is fully financed by major venture-capital investors. 

Glade Brook Capital Partners, a tech-focused investment firm known for backing companies like SpaceX and Perplexity, has raised $515 million in its fourth fund.According to a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-22/stripe-spacex-investor-glade-brook-raises-515-million-for-new-fund">report</a> by Bloomberg, the Connecticut-based firm will continue targeting growth-stage investments in sectors including artificial intelligence, fintech, e-commerce, space, and defense.&nbsp;Despite strong demand for the fund, which raised more than its initial target, founder Paul Hudson said market conditions remain difficult. “It’s the most challenging fundraising environment that I’ve seen in my career,” he said.In the equities market, the&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/AIQ">Global X Artificial Intelligence &amp; Technology ETF (AIQ)</a> has gained nearly 15% this year. Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Perplexity has secured an additional $100 million in funding, boosting its valuation to $18 billion from $14 billion just months ago, according to a&nbsp;Financial Times report on Thursday.Perplexity,&nbsp;widely seen as a competitor to Google Search, had closed a $500 million funding round in May.The company initially sought an $18 billion valuation in the funding round but faced resistance from investors. However, after the round closed, new investors approached the company and were offered the opportunity to purchase equity at the same $18 billion valuation, according to the FT&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ft.com/content/4e05a5c5-84ad-4f8a-991a-d7f3842de76d">report</a>, which cited two people with direct knowledge of the situation.Three-year-old Perplexity's soaring valuation — up from $500 million at the start of last year — highlights the rapid acceleration in AI development, widely seen as tech's next big frontier.
