He argued that the cryptocurrency responds to wholesale liquidity flowing through financial markets rather than retail bank deposits.On the Bitcoin news channel&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reDOW7XLaG8">podcast</a>, Howell explained that the growing gap between Global M2 and Bitcoin's price is a definitional issue rather than a signal. "M2 is not the metric to look at. It often gives very, very false signals. We don't use it in any of our work," he said, adding that M2 is more appropriate for describing activity in the real economy than financial assets.M2 is the U.S. Federal Reserve's estimate of liquid assets, which includes anything from cash on hand, money deposited in checking and savings accounts to other short-term savings vehicles, such as money market funds and certificates of deposit.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Liquidity Crowded Out</h2>Howell stated that declining global liquidity was the root cause of poor performance in Bitcoin, Ethereum, ETH, and other cryptocurrencies, and that the drag was not due to Federal Reserve tightening. Instead, he claimed that the real economy's momentum, fuelled by the artificial intelligence capital expenditure boom (often known as the AI CAPEX boom) and a federal deficit approaching 6% of GDP was draining liquidity from financial markets.&nbsp;He further cited six-week changes in global liquidity that advanced by three months, tracking a crypto basket that weighed 60% BTC, 30% ETH, and 10% Solana (SOL).<h2 class="st-heading-2">Roll Over Risk Building</h2>According to Howell, nominal GDP growth is running between 6% and 8%, annualized, the fastest since the first half of the 1980s, and treasury yields are likely to converge upwards towards the trend. He said he was pretty convinced that the 30-year yield would reach 6%. That level is important for refinancing, he explained, because private sector borrowings arranged at much lower rates must still be rolled.&nbsp;“People used to think it was around 5.5%-6%. That's the tipping point where the economy could start to move back towards a slower growth period. I'm not saying recession, but it will start to be a constraint,” said the expert. However, he admitted that he no longer knew where that threshold sits.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bills Fund The Deficit</h2>Treasury Secretary Scott Besant had moved issuance to the front end, with bills at roughly 22% of outstanding Treasuries, versus about 30% 15-20 years ago, Howell said. Monetizing these levels would weaken the dollar and support conditions fit for gold and crypto.“The push higher in gold that we saw starting in the middle of 2022 was primarily driven by liquidity injections from the People's Bank of China and not Western buying,” added Howell.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Why Bitcoin May Not Have A Big Year In 2026?</h2>Howell said that the 65-month global liquidity cycle, which he tied to the average maturity of global debt, should bottom around the middle of 2027, a reason why he doesn't expect 2026 to be a big year for Bitcoin. To this, he added that “Bitcoin is behaving exactly as Bitcoin should perform.”<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">Bitcoin’s price</a> was trading at the $77,000 mark. For younger investors, Visser said Bitcoin "breaks all of this stuff" because it functioned simultaneously as a hedge against abundance and time, and a growth asset in its own right. He said it needs to sit in the growth bucket of a portfolio, not the one-to-two-percent allocation that cautious advisors typically recommend on television.Visser said he had personally shifted his overweights toward the "<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/veteran-wall-street-investor-jordi-visser-ai-bitcoin/cZBcbk8RIy3">scarcity trade</a>,” Bitcoin, silver and precious metals, while maintaining smaller positions in AI infrastructure. He reiterated his view of Bitcoin as "the purest AI trade."<h2 class="st-heading-2">AI Kills Growth, Bitcoin Has No Competition</h2>Visser argued that AI was accelerating competition to the point where no traditional growth asset was safe.&nbsp;He pointed to Nvidia (NVDA), which has compounded roughly 80% over the past two years but with all of the gains concentrated in just four months out of 24. The rest of the time, he said, the stock went sideways despite consistently strong earnings, because investors fear competition will erode its dominance.That pattern, Visser argued, would spread across all <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/visser-bitcoin-micron-ai-slowdown/cZmhz9nR7ka">AI infrastructure stocks, including Marvell (MRVL) and Micron (MU)</a>, as open-source models compress margins. He pointed to Anthropic as an example, noting that even the fastest-growing tech company in history was already facing questions about whether competition would slow its growth.<h2 class="st-heading-2">From Thesis To Flows</h2>Visser's argument appeared to be playing out in real time this week. US spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in roughly $1.92 billion, their strongest inflow week since October’s flash crash, according to SoSoValue data.&nbsp;The inflows came against a macro background. The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/bitcoin-rises-above-67000-as-treasury-doubles-bond-buybacks/cZYdZVURJl9">US Treasury</a> doubled its long-end bond buybacks as national debt approached $40 trillion and annual interest costs exceeded $1 trillion.The renewed demand also came as&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/bitcoin-10-best-days-rare-signal-tom-lee-says-hodl/cZYfzmuRJV1">Bitcoin surged</a> more than 22% over the week. The token traded largely sideways near $0.08 for several days before momentum picked up, first pushing its price above $0.09 and then sharply breaking through to $0.12.&nbsp;POL has been seeing a strong bullish breakout on the daily chart. The move has also taken the token well above its 9-day SMA at $0.08, confirming a strong ramp up in immediate momentum. The key resistance for the token lies between $0.11 and $0.12, while a sustained break above the latter price level could lead to further upside.On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around Polygon remained in the ‘bullish’ zone, while chatter stayed at ‘high’ levels over day.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bulls Push ZEC Toward $800</h2><a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/zcash">Zcash’s price</a>, on the other hand, has continued to have a sharp rally over the 5 days, searching from around $510 on Tuesday to around $791 on Saturday, roughly a 55% increase in its price.&nbsp;First up, the first major breakout for ZEC came late on August 19, as the token popped above the $540 and headed toward the $580 mark, with a noticeable jump in its trading volume. In early&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/bitcoin-return-10-days-warns-tom-lee/cZmL2y1R7kX">July, Lee had mentioned</a> that Bitcoin’s entire return hinges on just 10 days a year where it brings notable returns to investors.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Record-Breaking Sigma Move</h2>The scale of Bitcoin's recent rally showed up in technical data as well.&nbsp;According to Wall Street veteran Jody Visser,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/jvisserlabs/status/2090773040313364853">Bitcoin's weekly move</a> hit a +7.12-sigma reading, the largest in at least 10 years of weekly observations, surpassing the +6.46-sigma move on April 7,&nbsp;2019, and the +6.22σ move on January 15, 2023. He added, "So far this week is the same pattern."<h2 class="st-heading-2">Spot Buying, Not Leverage</h2>The question those signals raised was whether the rally was built to last or was just a leverage squeeze that faded.&nbsp;Bitfinex analysts, in an email to Stocktwits, said the evidence pointed to the former, noting that Bitcoin's price climbed 10% to 11% while open interest rose only about 4%, meaning spot buying and short covering did the heavy lifting rather than fresh leverage.&nbsp;According to the analysts, the $68,000 to $69,000 zone was the level to watch, as it represented the cost basis for anyone who bought over the past 5 months.
