Amazon, OpenAI In Talks To Customize AI Models To Power E-commerce Giant's Products Such As Alexa: Report

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and OpenAI are reportedly in talks to customize the latter’s AI models to power the e-commerce giant’s products, including the Alexa voice assistant.

According to a report by The Information, as cited by TheFly, Amazon is in talks with OpenAI to get special access to its technology. The commercial agreement currently being discussed involves tuning OpenAI’s models to respond in a way that Amazon prefers.

Amazon shares were down 0.3% in Wednesday’s opening trade. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits around the company hovered in the ‘bearish’ territory at the time of writing.

Amazon In Talks To Invest In OpenAI

Amazon is also in talks to invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI, according to a Reuters report citing people familiar with the matter.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is said to be leading the talks with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, according to the report. This comes amid OpenAI’s plans to raise up to $100 billion at a valuation of about $830 billion, the report said.

Amazon has also invested $8 billion in OpenAI rival Anthropic, which is currently valued at $183 billion following a $13 billion Series F fundraising in September 2025.

Amazon Rolls Out Alexa+ Across US

Amazon on Wednesday announced that it is rolling out the Alexa+ AI voice assistant across the U.S. Amazon Prime members can access Alexa+ for free, while others will have to pay $19.99 per month.

The Alexa+ voice assistant was announced a year ago, offering a more conversational and personalized experience to users, powered by generative AI. The company said that tens of millions of users joined the early access program for its next-generation voice assistant.

Some of the features that Alexa+ offers include ordering takeout, finding restaurants and making reservations, booking a ride, or scheduling services like home repairs, according to the company.

Alexa+ also comes with a new free tier that lets users chat on the Alexa.com website and the app without a Prime subscription.

AMZN stock is up 3% year-to-date and 0.5% over the last 12 months.
