Amazon (AMZN) is shutting down its streaming service, Freevee, in August and advising users to turn to its Prime Video service, according to an in-app message notice.
First announced by Amazon in November, the move is part of the company's effort to streamline its content lineup and unify offerings under the Prime Video umbrella.
"Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV," the notice on the app said.
"The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. Continue watching your favorite Free Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed."
Launched in 2019, Freevee is available in the U.S, UK, Germany, and Austria. The service was initially known as IMDb TV before it underwent a rebranding in 2022.
On Stocktwits, the retail sentiment for Amazon was 'bullish’ late Wednesday, even as AMZN shares closed 0.2% down and are nearly flat year-to-date.
Amazon has made bold strides to expand its content and streaming business, with the most notable being the $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM movie studios in 2022.
Prime Video also hosts third-party content from Paramount (PARA), Warner Bros Discovery (WBD), and Lionsgate (LION) under license. In recent years, it has significantly expanded its live sports offerings, featuring NFL Thursday Night Football, WNBA, and certain Premier League matches.
According to a recent Nielsen report, streaming services surpassed traditional TV in total viewership in the U.S. for the first time in May.
