<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Stocks of both companies have gained over 60% year-to-date, beating other retailers and defensive stocks.</li><li>Consumers thronged to these discount chains amid high inflation and economic uncertainty for most of the year.</li><li>DG and DLTR have seen a sharp rise in the past week, following their strong results.</li></ul>President Donald Trump’s tariffs nearly derailed the retail landscape&nbsp;this year, but most chains&nbsp;have managed to steady themselves – with Dollar General and Dollar Tree standing out as the biggest winners.Amid high inflation, job losses, and tariff-driven price hikes, consumers understandably turned to the discount chains. But that’s not all: both Dollar General (known for low-priced everyday items) and Dollar Tree (known for its everything at $1, now $1.25, range) also made clever tweaks to capitalize on the high customer footfall.With year-to-date gains of 65.6% and 60%, respectively, DG and DLTR are the top-performing retailer stocks, as well as among the so-called defensive stocks, this year. If one considers the entire retail sector, their gains are only second to Tapestry, which&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/tapestry-stock-eyes-fresh-record-high-as-coach-fueled-rally-powers-ahead/cLIrzW3REZv">has risen</a> by over 80%.<figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:1400/1100;" src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/koyfin_20251210_072512091_png_8489fb5244.webp" alt="koyfin_20251210_072512091.png" width="1400" height="1100"></figure><h2 class="st-heading-2">Smart Moves Driving Earnings</h2>Consequently, both companies raised their annual profit forecast after reporting strong quarterly earnings last week, leading to sharp stock rallies. That momentum, though, has been quietly taking shape over several months.Dollar General has been on an aggressive store-expansion and remodelling spree, having earlier set a target to open 575 new U.S. stores, fully remodel 2,000 stores, and partially remodel 2,500 stores by the end of 2025.The company also expanded online deliveries and improved product assortment, emphasizing high-velocity items that drive foot traffic and balancing low-margin staples with higher-margin seasonal goods. The management has routinely cited operational discipline as the driver of Dollar General's gains in a challenging consumer economy.Dollar Tree, for its part, departed from its rigid “Everything at $1.25” model to adopt three price tiers. The broader price-point strategy allowed it to offer higher-quality or more premium items, expand variety, and thereby raise average transaction values while still marketing “value.”In August, Dollar Tree launched on Uber Eats, opening up online sales in a big way. The company also vowed to invest in supply chain improvements and technology during its investor day in October.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Retail Landscape Recovers; E-commerce Grows</h2>Retail management commentary in the third quarter broadly suggested that tariff risks were lower than previously feared. Bellwethers Walmart and Costco delivered healthy results, and most retailers have managed to hold fort without making significant price hikes.That said, trends show that e-commerce adoption continues to eat into physical retailers’ businesses. Stocktwits earlier reported that Amazon is&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/who-s-the-retail-king-now-amazon-stands-tall-as-it-prepares-to-surpass-walmart-in-annual-revenue-for-first-time-ever/cLPMWZZREay">poised</a> to surpass Walmart’s revenue this year for the first time.&nbsp;Another notable trend: despite expectations that consumers would favor everyday staples, discretionary goods companies actually outperformed&nbsp;when it came to their stocks.The&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/XLY">Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY)</a> gained 5.1% year-to-date, while the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/XLP">Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP)</a> declined 1%. Dollar Stores Won 2025: How DG, DLTR Stocks Became America’s Surprise Retail Champs Under Trump’s Tariff Turmoil

Amid inflation, job losses, and tariff-linked price hikes, consumers turned to discount chains — and Dollar General and Dollar Tree made smart tweaks to capture the increased traffic.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Elon Musk indicated in an X post that Tesla’s autonomous driving technology is better than Waymo’s.</li><li>Musk has been rallying behind the Tesla FSD (Full Self-Driving) system for years, which is core to his vision for the EV company.</li><li>Waymo is the world’s leading autonomous taxi company, with a presence in five U.S. cities and expanding rapidly.</li></ul>Elon Musk has once again boasted that Tesla’s self-driving Robotaxi will stand the test of time better than its biggest competitor right now.The Tesla CEO&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1998626086348009739?s=20">said</a>, “Waymo never really had a chance against Tesla,” in response to an X post by Google DeepMind Chief Scientist Jeff Dean&nbsp;about Alphabet, Inc.-backed Waymo’s autonomous driving technology. “This will be obvious in hindsight.”To be sure, Dean first referenced Tesla in the discussion, saying that he believes Tesla does not have “anywhere near the volume of rider-only autonomous miles that Waymo has (96M for Waymo, as of today).”Even as AI dominates the tech conversation, leading companies are pressing ahead in another frontier: autonomous driving. Progress has been steady rather than swift, in part because these systems rely on vast amounts of driving data to improve. And with real cars on real roads carrying real safety risks, regulators have set a high bar for deployment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Tesla FSD Vs Waymo</h2>For Musk, the Tesla FSD (Full Self-Driving) system is core to his vision for the electric vehicle company. He regularly shares updates and milestones about FSD, which is currently available in Tesla cars in the U.S., Canada, China, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, and New Zealand.&nbsp;Although Tesla currently offers a “supervised” version, which means a person must be at the steering wheel when the system is deployed, Musk recently&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/12/49296773/elon-musk-says-tesla-has-pretty-much-solved-unsupervised-fsd-driverless-robotaxis-coming-to-austin-in-3-weeks?utm_source=chatgpt.com">said</a>, “FSD Unsupervised is pretty much solved at this point.” He has also&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-11-07/musk-says-china-set-to-fully-approve-tesla-s-fsd-early-next-year">said</a> China is set to approve Tesla’s unsupervised FSD early next year.Waymo, on the other hand, has had fully autonomous taxis out on the roads since 2020. The first public launch took place in Phoenix, Arizona, and Waymo has since expanded to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, and Atlanta. It is set to launch in London next year.&nbsp;Waymo started as an internal project at Google in 2009 and became an independent entity in 2016. It’s currently valued at over $45 billion.So, back to the Dean’s and Musk’s claims, which one is better?<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Jury Is Out … Sort Of</h2>To be sure, it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison. For one, a Waymo car (Jaguar I-PACE) has more cameras, including an umbrella camera, than a Tesla with FSD, making them two distinct autonomous driving systems.Tesla initially partnered with Mobileye on an autonomous system in 2014. That partnership ended, and Tesla unveiled its in-house FSD in 2016.In terms of data, Tesla claims its cars have driven over 6.7 billion miles with FSD enabled. In comparison, Waymo says its autonomous taxis have clocked 96 million miles. To be sure, there are only 2,500 Waymo cars on the roads, while there are millions of Tesla cars, but not all of them are Robotaxis … yet.Availability? Consumers, of course, have better access to Tesla FSD, which is available in several countries, compared to Waymo taxis, which are available in only five cities.Even though these are unique offerings, the price still matters. Reports say a Waymo is typically 30% to 40% pricier than a regular Uber ride. To use the FSD feature in a Tesla, users can either pay a one-time fee of $8,000 or subscribe for $99 per month.All these aside, safety is the most significant consideration for autonomous cars.&nbsp;Waymo has reported about 700 road incidents between 2021 and 2025, but not fatalities. Elon Musk Disses Waymo Again, Says It ‘Never Really Had A Chance’ Against Tesla — But Who’s Got Better Numbers Right Now?

Progress in autonomous driving has been gradual, partly because the systems need massive driving data to improve, and regulators maintain a high safety bar for real-world deployment.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>GameStop reported another quarter of falling revenue; however, its net income expanded.</li><li>The stock declined in the after-market session following the results, leaving investors frustrated.</li><li>GME has been largely absent from meme-stock activity this year, which saw the emergence of new names such as Opendoor.</li></ul>For some, GameStop is a curious case. For others, it's straightforward.The video games retailer posted another quarter of declining sales, showing that its pivot to e-commerce isn’t turning the lever just yet, at a time when most consumers are buying games on Amazon.com.&nbsp;However, GameStop managed to rein in costs as it closed more stores, helping to grow quarterly net profit about&nbsp;fivefold compared to the year-ago quarter. Its cash reserve, which includes a sizable number of Bitcoins, also swelled – presenting a complicated case for investors betting on the well-known meme stock.Stocktwits&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/softbank-masayoshi-son-crying-to-sell-nvidia-shares/cLI7BT0REic">reported</a> earlier that GameStop has been absent from meme-stock activity this year, with attention shifting to new <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/how-opendoor-gopro-and-kohls-ousted-the-meme-stock-originals-to-become-this-years-breakout-market-stars/cLILrZLRESe">names</a> such as Opendoor Technologies, GoPro, and Kohl’s, among others. Some investors expected GameStop to announce a significant growth plan or pivot given its strong cash position, but were left disappointed.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/GME">GME</a> dropped 5.7% in the after-market trading on Tuesday, following the results announcement. The stock is down 26.3% year-to-date as of the last close, heading for its worst year since 2021.<h2 class="st-heading-2">No Fireworks</h2>Notably, GameStop has stopped hosting a post-earnings analyst call since early 2023. And with the last of analysts suspending coverage on the company, its quarterly filing is the only resource left to form a stock view. The picture looks, at best, mixed.In the third quarter, revenue fell 4.6% to $821 million, marking the eighth quarter of degrowth in the last nine quarters. Sales in the company’s mainstay hardware and accessories business fell 12% to $367.4 million, while its software sales dropped 27% to $197.5 million. &nbsp;<figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:1600/1133;" src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Game_Stop_revenue_jpg_61a08f1dfe.webp" alt="GameStop_revenue.jpg" width="1600" height="1133"></figure>&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:1600/1133;" src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Game_Stop_net_income_jpg_3cf4eb8c85.webp" alt="GameStop_net_income.jpg" width="1600" height="1133"></figure> The collectibles segment stood out, jumping 50% to $256.1 million. It now accounts for just under one-third of total revenue, compared with about 20% a year earlier. Recently, GameStop has made a bigger push into collectibles, including trading cards, board games, and video game merchandise.Net income rose to $77.1 million, up from $17.4 million in the year-ago quarter. The company’s bottom line has steadied, and Q3 marked the sixth consecutive quarter of positive net income.Cash and cash equivalents were $7.84 billion as of the end of the quarter, although the figure dropped from $8.7 billion in Q2. Notably, GameStop did not purchase any new Bitcoin in Q3, maintaining the holding at 4,710.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Battered Retail Investors Still Bullish</h2>On Stocktwits, retail sentiment for GME rose several points within the ‘bullish’ territory, with 24-hour message volume for the ticker rising by over 160%. China Probably Won't Need Nvidia For Long — Beijing's Homegrown AI Chip Empire Is Rising Stealthily

With U.S.–China tensions high and advanced tech at the center, China has ramped up its self-reliance push — and its chip sector has logged solid growth.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Paramount Skydance has submitted a hostile bid to acquire Warner Bros Discovery at an enterprise valuation of $108.4 billion.</li><li>Warner Bros has said it is sticking to its Netflix deal but will review Paramount’s fresh terms.</li><li>The market and analysts are already cautious about Netflix in response to Warner Bros.' deal, which was accepted on Friday.&nbsp;</li></ul>If HBO’s “Succession” taught viewers anything, it’s that Big Media deals are&nbsp;seldom clean or uncomplicated.David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance on Monday submitted a $108-billion bid for Warner Bros Discovery, Inc., days after the latter accepted Netflix’s offer to acquire its streaming and studio assets for $72 billion – setting the stage for a high fireworks M&amp;A.Warner Bros said that it is sticking to its deal with Netflix, advising its shareholders “not to take any action at this time with respect to Paramount Skydance’s proposal.” Still, the board will “carefully review and consider Paramount Skydance’s offer in accordance with the terms of Warner Bros. Discovery’s agreement with Netflix, Inc.,” Paramount said in its statement.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/NFLX">NFLX</a> closed 3.4% lower on Monday, its fourth straight day in the red, while <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/PSKY">PSKY</a> gained 9%. Paramount’s retail investors think it has a high chance of clinching the deal, according to Stocktwits'&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/could-trump-s-meddling-derail-netflix-warner-bros-mega-merger-bruised-paramount-skydance-retail-traders-certainly-think-so/cLIYkzgRElV">explainer</a> on Monday.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Happens Now?</h2>Paramount has essentially launched a tender offer to acquire WBD stock at $30 per share in cash, more than Netflix’s $27.75 per share cash-and-stock offer. During this time, any WBD shareholder can sell their shares to Paramount, and if Paramount buys 51% of the outstanding WBD shares, it would control the company. The tender offer will be open for 20 business days, with the option for extension.Paramount’s offer is being funded by Affinity Partners, the investment firm led by Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, alongside U.S. banks, private equity investors, and state-backed investment funds from the Middle East, Reuters reported.The Ellison family (Paramount chairman David Ellison and his father, Larry Ellison, the co-founder of Oracle) is providing additional backing. To win over WBD, Paramount has argued that its bid is the stronger offer, that it stands a better chance of clearing regulators, and that it would preserve a consistent theatrical release slate for WBD films.“Movies are one of America’s greatest exports. We want to lean into that legacy, not diminish it,” David Ellison said on the call with the press and investors on Monday, promising at least&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://variety.com/2025/biz/news/paramount-promises-30-films-in-theaters-hostile-takeover-bid-warner-bros-discovery-netflix-1236603343/">30 theatrical releases</a> annually. Although he has so far avoided publicly backing a bidder, he hinted that the Netflix deal could be a problem given its high share in the streaming market. About the bidders, “None of them are particularly great friends of mine,” he said at a White House roundtable on Monday.&nbsp;The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person close to Trump, that the president would want Paramount and Netflix to compete for his approval of a deal.Meanwhile, analysts are looking at the Netflix deal with some concern for the streamer. Rosenblatt Securities lowered its price target on Netflix to $105 from $152 on Monday, while maintaining a Neutral rating on the streaming giant’s stock, citing "an extended period of uncertainty and risks" associated with the major acquisition.Pivotal Research downgraded Netflix to ‘Hold,’ also citing risks, including the significant breakup fee.
