AeroVironment Inc. (AVAV) stock is gaining attention as the company said future battlefield systems must move beyond single-use weapons and instead become flexible tools that can adapt to fast-changing combat conditions.
Brian Young, Senior Vice President of Loitering Munitions at the defense technology firm, said on Monday that the industry has moved beyond the era when success was defined simply by locating and striking a target.
Instead, he emphasized that today’s conflicts require systems that can interpret complex environments and adjust effects in real time.
“Today, the challenge isn’t just hitting a target. It’s understanding what that target is, how it’s behaving, what else is happening around it, and then deciding, in real time, what effect actually makes sense. In many cases, destruction isn’t the first or even the best option, Young said.
He added that many existing systems are fixed to set missions, and that the lack of flexibility makes it harder to react quickly in fast-changing, heavily contested areas where GPS may not work, and electronic warfare is common.
To solve these problems, AeroVironment created MAYHEM 10, a flexible multi-purpose launched system built with a modular design.
The platform supports interchangeable payloads, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance sensors, electronic warfare tools, communications relays, and kinetic options.
The system can work on its own or together with other units. In a connected setup, one unit can find signals, another can identify targets, and a third can take action based on changing situations.
AeroVironment’s systems cover drones, robotic weapons, and space tech across air, land, sea, and space. Its portfolio includes loitering munitions like Switchblade and MAYHEM 10, surveillance drones, counter-drone lasers, ground robots, and underwater launch drones.
At the BofA Securities conference last week, CEO Wahid Nawabi said the LOCUST laser weapon system, when mounted on vehicles like the Stryker and JLTV, can destroy drones while the vehicle keeps moving, improving battlefield protection.
AeroVironment stock egded 0.9% higher in Tuesday’s premarket.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around the stock remained in ‘bullish’ territory.
A user said, “this will be explosive tomorrow! Get in cheap while you still can! Here with 2000shares! Let’s go.”
Another user said, “$AVAV has bright Future!.”
