Shares of major cybersecurity firms fell sharply on Friday after reports surfaced that Anthropic is testing a powerful new AI model, raising concerns over potential security risks.
Stocks including CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. (CRWD) and Palo Alto Networks Inc. (PANW) fell 5%, Okta Inc. (OKTA) and Zscaler Inc. (ZS) declined 6% following the announcement.
According to a Fortune report, Anthropic’s AI model, internally called “Claude Mythos,” is being trialed with a select group of early-access customers.
Anthropic inadvertently left nearly 3,000 draft assets, including blog content, in an unsecured, publicly searchable data store. This cache revealed both the Claude Mythos model, the report said.
The draft post also introduced a new model tier called “Capybara,” positioned above the company’s current Opus models. According to Anthropic, Capybara scores significantly higher on coding, academic reasoning, and cybersecurity tests compared to previous models.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around CrowdStrike stock changed to ‘neutral’ from ‘bearish’ territory the previous day. Message volume shifted to ‘low’ from ‘extremely low’ levels in 24 hours.
Responding to the selloff, Stephens said the market may be overreacting to reports surrounding the “Mythos” model. After reviewing the available details, the firm added that the narrative has been misunderstood, noting that the model’s enhanced “cyber capabilities” refer to its potential misuse for offensive cyber activity rather than to any displacement of cybersecurity platforms.
Stephens emphasized that developments like Mythos highlight how artificial intelligence could amplify existing digital threats rather than eliminate the need for protection.
The firm described AI as a “cyber threat accelerant,” suggesting that more advanced tools may increase the frequency of attacks, ultimately reinforcing the importance of cybersecurity solutions.
CRWD stock has declined 21% year-to-date.
