A CSX train reportedly derailed and leaked a flammable chemical, causing a fire in a rural part of Kentucky.
Associated Press reported, citing CSX, that no injuries were reported in the incident. 31 rail cars derailed at about 6:15 a.m. CST in Todd County, as per the report, causing a molten sulfur leak from one rail car. This sparked a fire that was extinguished by late Tuesday morning, the company told AP, while adding that crews at the scene are working to clean up the site.
As per the report, the derailment occurred about 1 mile west of downtown Trenton and about 55 miles northwest of Nashville, Tennessee. While the leaked chemical substance could be toxic on fire, air quality testing at the site indicated that no issues exist as of the now, the report said, citing Ash Groves, emergency management director for Todd County.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the incident in a post on X at around 2 p.m. ET and said that investigators, including from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, are on their way to the scene.
Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear also took to X to urge residents for the city of Trenton to follow local guidance on Tuesday morning. While local emergency management issued a shelter-in-place order, it was lifted later in the day, Associated Press reported.
