Shares of Vertical Aerospace (EVTL) rose over 2% on Tuesday after the aerospace and technology company announced two major milestones in its hybrid-electric program.
The company stated that it has begun integration testing for its next-generation hybrid propulsion system and is producing its first all-electric Valo battery at its updated assembly line.
“Hybrid capability complements our all-electric Valo platform and unlocks a broader range of civil and defence applications. At the same time, advancing our battery technology and manufacturing capability is critical to certification and scaling production,” said Stuart Simpson, Chief Executive Officer at Vertical Aerospace.
Vertical Aerospace noted that these milestones showcase ongoing progress across its propulsion and energy system programmes, which support both its all-electric and future hybrid-electric aircraft roadmap.
The company stated that with its hybrid variant, it aims to achieve a range of up to 1,000 miles, a 10x increase from its all-electric aircraft. In addition, it also plans to increase the payload to 1,100 kilograms in Valo’s class-leading airframe capacity.
Vertical further stated that the hybrid variant also builds on Valo's redundancy and damage tolerance to enhance mission resilience for critical operations.
The company noted that its next-generation hybrid-electric propulsion system has started testing on its dedicated Hybrid Propulsion Evaluation Rig (HYPER) at Vertical’s Flight Test Centre at Cotswold Airport, a significant milestone after more than two years of development at the Vertical Energy Centre.
Vertical has been working with its partners to integrate sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)-compatible gas turbines with an electric generator while also validating the technologies for future hybrid variants of the aircraft, the company noted.
The company expects these hybrid-electric variants to significantly increase range, payload and operational flexibility. Vertical is targeting certification of its hybrid-electric variant with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
The company also announced that it has produced its first proprietary battery on its upgraded assembly line, launched in March 2026, at the Vertical Energy Centre.
Vertical said its battery prototypes will be rigorously tested under various environmental and operational conditions and will support its aircraft certification as it progresses through the final stages with the UK CAA and EASA.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment surrounding the stock has remained ‘bearish’ while message volumes also remained in the ‘low’ region in the past 24 hours.
Shares of Vertical Aerospace have declined more than 58% so far this year.
