Alphabet Inc.’s (GOOGL) Google has expanded its partnership with Volvo Cars to speed up the integration of Android-based innovations into its vehicles, with a focus on enhancing in-car artificial intelligence experiences.
Announced during Google I/O 2025, the renewed collaboration featured a demonstration of Google Gemini running on a Volvo EX90.
This marks a major advancement in voice-interaction technology set to arrive in Volvo vehicles later this year.
Owners of Volvo cars equipped with Google’s built-in technology will soon experience Gemini, the company’s advanced AI assistant.
Built to understand everyday language, Gemini allows drivers to carry out tasks such as composing messages, translating content, and retrieving vehicle-related details without pulling attention away from driving.
These improved voice capabilities ease cognitive strain and foster a safer driving experience.
Later this year, Gemini will replace Google Assistant in Volvo vehicles that feature Google’s integrated system.
“We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is an essential part of this. Through this partnership with Google, we are able to bring the very latest features and capabilities from the leading consumer eco-system into our products first,” said the head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars, Alwin Bakkenes.
Also, Volvo cars will now act as the primary testbed for Google’s development of Android Automotive OS.
This collaboration enables Volvo and Google to co-develop and preview new in-car functionalities before their wider release.
At the 2025 I/O developer conference, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced a significant evolution in the company's AI strategy.
The company revealed substantial updates to its AI capabilities, including a massive surge in Gemini’s scale. It now processes 480 trillion tokens monthly, up sharply from 9.7 trillion a year ago.
Gemini now supports over 400 million monthly active users, while AI Overviews within Google Search reach a staggering 1.5 billion monthly users.
