President Donald Trump's "reciprocal tariffs" have triggered instant retaliatory reaction from Hong Kong, which functions as a special administrative region (SAR) of China — the nation hardest hit by the levies.

The government of the Hong Kong SAR called out the U.S. for its "unreasonable" and "bullying" stance and for abusively imposing tariffs.

The harsh criticism came after the Trump administration eliminated the duty-free "de-minimis" treatment for postal items sent to the U.S. from Hong Kong and increased tariffs on postal items, starting May 2.

In a statement posted on its website on Wednesday, the SAR government said it would not collect tariffs on behalf of the U.S., conveying its opposition to passing on the tariff impact to its people.

Also, it said it will suspend the acceptance of postal items containing goods to the U.S.

Hongkong Post will suspend the acceptance of surface postal items containing goods destined for the US with immediate effect and air postal items starting from April 27.

The government clarified that postal items containing documents without goods will not be impacted.

Since Hong Kong has been part of China since 2020, when the latter imposed a national security law, the former British colony is also subject to the hefty 145% tariff applicable to China.

Although Trump announced a 90-day pause in tariffs for most nations, China hasn't received any relief, except for some tech products, which were recently exempted.
