Meta Platforms Inc.(META) launched its newest artificial intelligence model on Monday, marking a milestone in Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s 14-month effort to rebuild the company's AI capabilities and compete with market leaders.
The model, dubbed "Muse Wonder" and known internally as "Watermelon," represents Meta’s most advanced software release since an extensive leadership reshuffle. Meta executives reported that technical benchmarks place the technology on par with or ahead of top systems from OpenAI and Anthropic across complex domains like software engineering, financial analysis, and legal document review.
"These are true frontier models," Alexandr Wang, chief of Meta AI, told Bloomberg. Wang joined the company following a $14 billion deal involving Scale AI. "We really think they are competitive with the best models out there, and particularly state-of-the-art on personal and professional agentic work."

Meta stock (META) surged up to 4.7% after the announcement, reflecting growing investor enthusiasm for the company's aggressive capital expenditures. The stock has gained about 22% since the launch of Muse AI.

Meta’s new launch signals a deliberate strategic split from its primary competitors. While rivals have prioritized automating complex knowledge work and striving for artificial general intelligence, Meta is focusing its large-scale models on personal consumer utility.

"Everyone else is focused on more knowledge work, automation-type cases, and we're much more focused on personal empowerment," Zuckerberg said.
Muse Wonder will power the company’s personal assistant application, Muse, which launched in September and became the most downloaded software on major US mobile app stores. Unlike Meta's past emphasis on freely distributed open-source tools like Llama, Muse Wonder adopts a closed, monetized structure. Meta plans to license the technology directly to enterprises and offer tiered consumer pricing, ranging from low-cost API access to a $200-per-month premium tier named Muse Wonder Full.
The release comes amid broader debates across Silicon Valley regarding the pace of AI advancement and the risks of autonomous systems. Zuckerberg directly rejected calls from other tech leaders for a coordinated industry slowdown, placing his confidence in traditional software controls.

"I'm much closer to the belief that AI is a technology that can be engineered with normal guardrails and built responsibly than the anthropomorphic vision of AI," Zuckerberg told FT in an interview.
To address ongoing privacy concerns and consumer skepticism surrounding data handling, Meta plans to release a feature called "Muse Confidential VM," designed to insulate private user interactions from company access.
The rollout follows Meta’s decision to cut 10% of its workforce in May, roughly 8,000 positions, to offset massive infrastructure spending and refocus resources on core AI operations.

Despite internal friction surrounding restructuring and aggressive resource allocation, Meta management expressed confidence that the operational shift was necessary to maintain pace in the tech industry.
"Getting to this point both required a large amount of compute and investment, and a lot of very rigorous scientific work," Zuckerberg stated, adding that model development at the company will likely accelerate further from here.
