NetApp Inc. (NTAP) and Oracle Corp. (ORCL) are putting NetApp’s ONTAP storage directly inside Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), giving enterprises another way to move AI and other critical workloads to Oracle’s cloud without rebuilding how their storage is managed.
The companies announced OCI Storage with NetApp on Tuesday, a fully managed, first-party, OCI-native storage service. It is currently in preview with select customers and is expected to become generally available within the next 12 months.
The key distinction is the native integration. Rather than running NetApp technology alongside OCI, the service brings ONTAP data-management capabilities into Oracle’s cloud infrastructure.

At the time of writing, ORCL stock was up more than 7%, on track to post its biggest single-day jump since August, and was among the top trending tickers on Stocktwits. Meanwhile, NTAP shares gained over 1% in morning trade on Monday.
For companies already using ONTAP, the service is designed to make moving workloads into OCI less disruptive.
NetApp said customers can migrate existing ONTAP-based workloads while minimizing application redesign and changes to storage management.

They can continue using familiar ONTAP application programming interfaces and operational workflows, while also managing the service through the OCI Console and software development kits.
That means infrastructure teams moving applications to Oracle’s cloud would not necessarily have to adopt an entirely new storage-management setup at the same time.
The service can support databases, enterprise applications, virtualized environments, electronic design automation, high-performance computing, and AI data pipelines, among other workloads.

AI is one of the use cases specifically highlighted in the announcement, alongside more traditional enterprise workloads. The service is intended to carry ONTAP capabilities covering areas such as data protection, migration, governance and multiprotocol access into OCI.
NetApp and Oracle did not disclose pricing or financial terms in the announcement. The next milestone is general availability.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment surrounding ORCL and NTAP stock remained in ‘neutral’ territory.
