OpenAI announced Tuesday a major expansion of its Codex artificial intelligence platform, introducing a suite of specialized automation tools and workflows explicitly engineered to transition the technology from a developer-focused utility into a broader tool for corporate office environments.
The update represents a strategic pivot for the artificial intelligence firm, signaling an aggressive push into the knowledge-worker market by tailoring machine-learning workflows to everyday corporate operations, according to details released by the company.
“Codex now has more than 5 million weekly active users, up more than 6x since the launch of the desktop app in February,” according to an OpenAI blog post. “While developers remain the largest user group, knowledge workers now represent about 20 percent of users and are growing more than three times as fast.”
Originally introduced as the foundational engine for code generation and software development, Codex is being aggressively repositioned around corporate job functions.
While computer programmers and software engineers still constitute the largest percentage of the user base, knowledge workers are now the fastest-growing demographic. Non-developer corporate employees currently represent roughly 20% of total users, with their adoption rate expanding three times faster than traditional developers.
According to OpenAI, data analytics, research and knowledge artifacts were the sub-industries which saw maximum growth in Codex adoption.

Central to the expansion is the rollout of six job-specific modular software bundles, or "plugins," designed to automate complex, multi-step enterprise operations.
The plugins include ones for Data Analytics, including Snowflake, Databricks Genie, Hex, and Tableau. Creative Production plugins connect directly with design suites like Figma, Canva, Shutterstock, and Picsart to iterate on ad variations and digital assets from basic text briefs.
Sales plugins Integrates pipeline infrastructure across Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, and Outreach to automate follow-up communication, close plans, and account risk evaluations.
Public Equity and Investment Banking plugins sync real-time institutional financial market feeds, including Moody's, FactSet, LSEG, PitchBook, and S&P, to streamline competitive landscaping and financial modeling.
