Growth across manufacturing and service sectors accelerated as order volumes and production surged, stoking fears that steady economic momentum could provide the Fed enough reason to continue its hawkish path.

“We have a lot of strength in corporate earnings, but we also have this inflationary pressure, and there’s a tug of war there,” Massimo Santicchia, head of U.S. equities at Procyon, told CNBC, adding that it’s “not just oil” driving inflation. “It’s broader, and it’s particularly in the services sector,” he said. “There’s no way that the Fed is going to lower rates or pause at this point. Probably we’re going to see maybe two, three rate increases.”

Moreover, consistent messaging from top Fed executives this week, either supporting last week’s rate hike decision or calling for additional hikes, has added to the negative sentiment towards equities.

Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr said on Wednesday that “further policy adjustments are likely to be needed” to get inflation under control. Boston Fed’s Sarah Collings made similar comments earlier this week.
