Shares of Unity Software Inc (U) jumped nearly 7% premarket on Wednesday after the company extended its partnership with Meta Platforms (META) to support next-generation virtual reality (VR) experiences on Meta’s Quest headsets.
The deal strengthens Unity’s support for VR developers creating new games and apps on Meta’s virtual platform. The company said it powers the majority of the VR games developed on Meta’s platform.
“By pairing Meta’s hardware and OS leadership with Unity’s role as the assembly point for interactive content creation, we’re making VR accessible to more developers so they can develop, deploy, and grow their games and business applications on Meta’s VR devices,” said Unity’s Chief Operating Officer Alex Blum.
The Unity-Meta relationship began nearly a decade ago on August 18, 2016. They announced a deal to help game developers reach Facebook’s audience of about 650 million gamers.
The first collaboration focused on integrating Unity's game engines with Facebook’s platform. It could allow developers to publish or export their games directly on Facebook’s platform.
This partnership deepened when Meta pivoted toward virtual reality, with Unity becoming the primary development platform for Oculus (now Meta Quest) headsets. In 2023, Meta and Unity announced another collaboration, introducing Unity Games to Facebook and Messenger’s Instant Games.
Unity also said it would launch an augmented reality foundation for the Quest platform and add more features to help developers create mixed reality (XR) games and experiences for Meta Quest 3.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment surrounding the stock has improved from ‘Bearish’ to ‘Neutral’, while message volume has remained at ‘Low’ levels.
Shares of Unity Software have almost halved in value year-to-date.
