Bitcoin is the world's first decentralized cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It enables peer-to-peer electronic cash transactions without intermediaries like banks or governments, operating on a blockchain secured by Proof of Work mining and the SHA-256 cryptographic algorithm.   With a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins and programmatic halvings every four years that reduce miner rewards, Bitcoin is designed as a deflationary digital asset often called "digital gold." Its value stems from solving the double-spending problem without trusted intermediaries, creating the first truly scarce digital asset with censorship resistance and permissionless access that no government, corporation, or individual can control.  Bitcoin operates as a decentralized peer-to-peer network where transactions are recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain, distributed across thousands of computers globally. Transactions are grouped into blocks added approximately every 10 minutes through mining, where specialized computers compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles.   Bitcoin has achieved mainstream adoption through multiple vectors. The January 2024 SEC approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs opened Bitcoin investment to traditional finance participants, and corporations like Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) are using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset to protect against currency debasement, offering MSTR holders amplified exposure to Bitcoin.   The Bitcoin ecosystem continues to evolve with innovations like Ordinals, which emerged in January 2023 to enable NFT-like functionality directly on Bitcoin, and BRC-20 tokens, an experimental standard for creating fungible tokens using Ordinal inscriptions. BTCFi (Bitcoin Finance) represents emerging financial applications extending beyond Bitcoin's traditional role, with protocols like Babylon allowing Bitcoin holders to stake BTC to secure Proof of Stake chains.

Bitcoin is experiencing significant volatility, with its price breaching key psychological support levels like $70,000 and now testing $69,000, triggering widespread community debate. Investors are actively discussing whether this sharp drop signals a capitulation event, fueled by concerns over major institutional holdings and comparisons to past crypto market cycles, or if it presents a critical buying opportunity amid oversold conditions.

Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. Acadia Expects Negative CHMP Opinion for Rett Syndrome Drug in EU

(ACAD) fell over 8% after-hours on Monday after the company said that it was informed of a negative trend vote from a European Medicines Agency committee regarding its application for Trofinetide for the treatment of Rett syndrome.</p><p>The company <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260202406586/en/Acadia-Pharmaceuticals-Provides-Update-on-Regulatory-Submission-for-Trofinetide-for-the-Treatment-of-Rett-Syndrome-in-the-European-Union">said</a> that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use informed it of a negative trend around its application after an oral explanation recently.</p><p>The committee will formally adopt its opinion in February and the company will request a re-examination, the company said.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">CEO Weighs In</h2><p>CEO Catherine Owen Adams said that the negative trend vote is “disappointing” and “not what we hoped for.”</p><p>“...we believe the strong data that supported the approval of trofinetide for the treatment of Rett syndrome in the United States, Canada, and Israel speak to the meaningful benefits that trofinetide can deliver,” she said.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Timeline And Steps Ahead</h2><p>As per legislation in the EU, the company can request a re-examination of CHMP’s opinion within 15 days of receiving its formal opinion. The company will then have 60 days to submit reasons for the re-examination request which will then be reviewed by the committee.</p><p>Trofinetide is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat Rett syndrome in adults and children. &nbsp;</p><p>Rett syndrome is a rare genetic neurological and developmental disorder that affects the way the brain develops.
