Southwest Airlines (LUV) garnered retail attention on Monday after the company said it would lay off 15% of its corporate workforce as part of a restructuring plan.The job cuts would affect about 1,750 employees, almost entirely in corporate overhead and leadership positions. Southwest Airlines To Slash Corporate Workforce By 15%, Retail Chatter Heats Up

Retail investors are maintaining caution ahead of the earnings announcement by Southwest Airlines and American Airlines on Thursday. The lack of enthusiasm follows a sluggish outlook posted by some of their peers in recent weeks. Both Delta and United Airlines reported decent earnings but failed to generate investor enthusiasm with their cautious outlooks. As we move toward the end of the week, here’s a look at how retail investors are treating Southwest and American Airlines.1. Southwest Airlines: The low-cost carrier is expected to report earnings per share (EPS) of $0.52 during the second quarter as compared to $1.09 reported in the same period a year ago. Revenue is expected to come in at $7.35 billion for the quarter, according to a Street estimate. American Airlines: The firm is expected to report EPS at $1.06 as compared to $1.59 reported in the same quarter a year ago when it reports Thursday, July 25th before the bell. Revenue is projected to come in at $14.40 billion, according to a Street estimate. Retail investors are not optimistic about the stock ahead of its earnings announcement. The Stocktwits sentiment meter is currently trending in the bearish territory (27/100) supported by high message volumes. Recently, Bernstein SocGen Group downgraded the stock to ‘Market Perform’ from ‘Outperform’ while cutting the price target to $12 from $18 earlier.
