<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>The authorities reiterated that cryptocurrencies do not have the same legal status as fiat currency.</li><li>Regulators said speculative trading in cryptocurrencies and tokenized real-world assets has created new challenges for financial risk control.</li><li>At the time of writing, Bitcoin traded higher by about 8% at $67,801, after declining in seven of the previous eight sessions.</li></ul>China has reportedly intensified its crackdown on cryptocurrencies, prohibiting domestic companies from issuing digital tokens overseas without official approval.According to a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-02-06/china-bars-unapproved-issuance-of-yuan-linked-stablecoins-abroad">Bloomberg report</a> on Friday, citing a statement from The People’s Bank of China and seven other regulators, China has banned the offshore issuance of yuan-linked stablecoins unless authorized, warning that such activities could threaten the country’s monetary sovereignty.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Oversight To Protect National Security</h2>Regulators said speculative trading in cryptocurrencies and tokenized real-world assets has created new challenges for financial risk control.“Speculation involving cryptocurrencies and real-world asset tokenization has occurred from time to time amid multiple factors, presenting new challenges for risk prevention and control, and necessitating stronger regulation to safeguard national security and social stability,” the regulators reportedly said in the notice.The authorities reiterated that cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins, do not have the same legal status as fiat currency and that related business activities on the mainland are considered illegal financial operations.Officials cautioned that tokenization of real-world assets, along with associated intermediary and technology services, could amount to illegal fundraising unless explicitly approved within designated financial infrastructure.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bitcoin’s Selloff</h2>The announcement comes amid an extended selloff in Bitcoin, with the cryptocurrency trading at levels last seen in October 2024. China Tightens Its Grip On Crypto, Bars Firms From Issuing Tokens Overseas Without Permit: Reports

Chinese officials have reportedly warned that tokenizing real-world assets and related services could constitute illegal fundraising.

While crypto markets have faced pressure from broader risk-asset weakness and a pullback in precious metals, the impact appears contained, the firm said.Panigirtzoglou said that on a volatility-adjusted basis, Bitcoin’s market cap would need to reach about $266,000 to match private-sector investment in gold, estimated at roughly $8 trillion excluding central banks. However, he acknowledged that it was unrealistic in the near term.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bitcoin Sees Extended Selloff</h2>Bitcoin fell below the $70,000 mark and was trading about 8% lower at $67,149 at the time of writing. JPMorgan Says Bitcoin Now Has A Better Long-Term Appeal Relative To Gold – BTC Declines Below $70,000

JP Morgan’s Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou said the widening divergence between the two assets since last October has made Bitcoin increasingly attractive for long-term investors.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Bessent was responding to Senator Brad Sherman’s question on whether he had the authority to direct U.S. banks or taxpayer funds to buy bitcoin or Trump coins.</li><li>He said the government will retain seized bitcoin.</li><li>Last month, Standard Chartered estimated that dollar-backed stablecoins could draw nearly $500 billion in deposits from U.S. banks by the end of 2028.</li></ul>The United States Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said on Wednesday that he lacks the authority to use U.S. tax dollars to purchase bitcoin.Bessent had appeared before the House Financial Services Committee to discuss the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s annual report.“I am Secretary of the Treasury, I do not have the authority to do that, and as Chair of FSOC, I do not have that authority,” Bessent said in response to Senator Brad Sherman’s question about whether he could direct U.S. banks or taxpayer funds to purchase bitcoin or Trump coins.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Government Will Retain Seized Bitcoin</h2>Bessent added that the government will retain seized bitcoin, citing the seizure of $1 billion in bitcoin linked to the criminal marketplace Silk Road in 2020. “$500 million of bitcoin was retained, and that $500 million has become over $15 billion,” Bessent added.Bitcoin has been under heavy selling pressure for a while. The cryptocurrency was down nearly 3% to $73,503 on Wednesday, having declined more than 26% over the past year and around 16% so far in 2026.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Banks Vs Stablecoins</h2>The Trump administration has pushed for a broader adoption of dollar-pegged tokens, having signed a law establishing a federal regulatory framework for stablecoins last year. Last month, Standard Chartered estimated that dollar-backed stablecoins could draw nearly $500 billion in deposits from U.S. banks by the end of 2028.Earlier this week, a White House meeting aimed at resolving a months-long standoff between major U.S. banks and cryptocurrency firms ended in a deadlock, highlighting deep industry divisions over digital-asset legislation.While the session was described as constructive, key disputes, particularly over whether stablecoins should offer interest or rewards, remained unresolved.
