ConocoPhillips (COP) Chief Executive Ryan Lance reportedly told employees&nbsp;on Thursday that the decision to lay off as much as 25% of the workforce stemmed in part from the company losing competitiveness as it focused on acquiring smaller rivals.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/COP">ConocoPhillips’ stock</a> fell more than 3.5% in Friday afternoon trading, extending its weekly decline to about 6.7% on the layoff&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/conoco-phillips-to-lay-off-up-to-25-precent-of-its-workforce/chwcTx7Rdob">announcement</a>. However, retail sentiment on Stocktwits around the oil and gas producer moved higher within the ‘bullish’ zone over the past week."The cost and the whole competitiveness of the company probably took a backseat to those initiatives and those things we were doing for very real reasons, important reasons for the company," Lance said in a recording of the town hall,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/world-at-work/i-fault-myself-not-paying-more-attention-conoco-ceo-tells-employees-facing-deep-2025-09-05/">cited</a> by Reuters. The report stated that the town hall meeting took place a day after the company announced the layoffs, which are part of a broader restructuring aimed at reducing costs.&nbsp;"I fault myself for not paying attention and keeping the other things sort of centered and important," added Lance. "We probably backslid a little bit in the cost effort... maybe we should have been smarter about how we did it."&nbsp;Last year, the company bought Marathon Oil for $22.5 billion. In 2021, ConocoPhillips acquired Concho Resources for $9.7 billion and bought Permian assets from oil major Shell (SHEL) for $9.5 billion.&nbsp;The energy industry has undergone the largest consolidation in a generation over the past two years, according&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ey.com/en_us/newsroom/2025/08/consolidation-reshapes-the-us-oil-and-gas-industry">to</a> EY. Other oil companies have also been laying off employees to save costs. Earlier this year, in February, Chevron (CVX) announced that it would be&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8ed3n1zw05o">reducing</a> its workforce by 15% to 20% by 2026. ConocoPhillips (COP) is reportedly preparing to lay off up to a quarter of its workforce, with an official announcement expected Thursday.According to a Reuters&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/world-at-work/conocophillips-says-it-will-reduce-workforce-by-20-25-2025-09-03/">report</a>, employees received an internal email this morning that included a video message from CEO Ryan Lance outlining the plans.&nbsp;"As we streamline our organization and take work out of the system, we will need fewer roles," he said.&nbsp;A company town hall is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET, where the announcement is expected to be made.<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/COP">ConocoPhillips’ stock</a> fell as much as 4% in midday trade. However, on Stocktwits, retail sentiment improved to ‘bullish’ from ‘neutral’ a day ago.The report stated that the layoffs could affect between 2,600 and 3,250 of ConocoPhillips' approximately 13,000 employees worldwide, with most cuts expected to occur before year-end. Citing people familiar with the matter, it noted that the restructuring had already begun and that the company is also centralizing some of its functions. The report added that reorganization in corporate and support functions is expected to follow.The new structure and management lineup are expected to roll out by mid-September, with the reorganization to be completed by 2026. ConocoPhillips spokesperson Dennis Nuss confirmed the layoffs in a statement to Reuters, stating that most of the cuts will be made before the end of the current calendar year.&nbsp;"We are always looking at how we can be more efficient with the resources we have. As part of this process, we have informed employees that workforce reductions are anticipated," Nuss said.The restructuring reportedly follows mounting cost pressures. According to a Reuters report, employees received an internal email this morning that included a video message from CEO Ryan Lance outlining the plans.

ConocoPhillips is an exploration and production company, which engages in the exploration, production, transport, and marketing of crude oil, bitumen, and natural gas. It operates through the following geographical segments: Alaska, Lower 48, Canada, Europe, Middle East, and North Africa, Asia Pacific, and Other International. The Alaska segment explores for, produces, transports and markets crude oil, natural gas and NGLs. The Lower 48 segment consists of operations located in the 48 contiguous U.S. states and the Gulf of Mexico. The Canada segment refers to oil sands development in the Athabasca Region of northeastern Alberta and a liquids-rich unconventional play in western Canada. The Europe, Middle East, and North Africa segment includes operations in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea, Qatar, Libya, Equatorial Guinea and commercial and terminalling operations in the U.K. The Asia Pacific segment focuses on explorations and product operations in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Australia. The Other International segment handles exploration activities in Columbia and Argentina. The company was founded by Isaac Elder Blake on November 25, 1875 and is headquartered in Houston, TX.
