While there have been two separate pullbacks over the past month, spot prices continue to remain well above the 50-day moving average (50-DMA).At the time of writing, silver futures maturing in March 2026 delivery traded 0.1% lower at $58.64.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Pullback On The Cards?</h2>While silver may continue to outperform, its price action remains volatile, and overbought conditions pose a short-term risk for bullish positions, veteran commodities expert and Head of Commodity Strategy for Saxo Bank, Ole Hansen, wrote in a post on X on Wednesday.<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/Ole_S_Hansen/status/1996127661463068983"><img src="https://news.stocktwits-cdn.com/Ole_Hansen_png_851796fbbc.webp" alt="Ole Hansen.png"></a>In a report for Saxo Bank, Hansen stated that, as London vault inventories are depleted to meet strong silver demand from the U.S. and India, lease rates have jumped, tightening conditions and adding pressure on traders.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Gold Remains Steady</h2>Spot gold price (XAU/USD) was down marginally at $4,200.3 per ounce on Wednesday morning. The pair has benefited from a weaker dollar and rising expectations of a rate cut this month. Recent comments from top Fed officials, along with weaker post-shutdown economic data, have reinforced market expectations for a rate cut next week.Data from the CME FedWatch tool showed an 89.2% probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut at the December 10 meeting. At the time of writing, it was up more than 3.1%. While there have been two separate pullbacks over the past month, spot prices continue to remain well above the 50-day moving average (50-DMA).Silver prices are on track for a sixth straight session of gains. On Friday, the XAG/USD pair climbed past $55 an ounce for the first time, buoyed by a weak dollar as traders increased their bets on a potential Fed rate cut on December 10. Recent comments from top Fed officials, along with weaker post-shutdown economic data, have reinforced market expectations for a rate cut next month.Data from the CME FedWatch tool showed an 87.4% probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut at the December 10 meeting. A week back, the figure stood slightly lower at 84.4%.Silver futures maturing in March 2026 delivery climbed 1.4%, on track to gain for a seventh straight session.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Physical Silver Supply Challenges</h2>According to veteran commodities expert and Head of Commodity Strategy for Saxo Bank, Ole Hansen, the current surge can be traced to a ‘historic tightening’ that began in London in October, the world’s primary hub for physical silver trading.In a Saxo Bank report on Monday, Hansen noted that London vaults had steadily depleted in recent months as the metal shipped out to meet strong demand from the U.S. and India. This has led to a sharp decline in “free-float” inventory, in which the metal is not tied to exchange-traded funds (ETFs), leases, or industrial contracts. As availability decreased, the cost of borrowing, known as the lease rate, jumped sharply, putting pressure on traders.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Gold And The Greenback</h2>Spot gold was up 0.5% at $4,237.5 per ounce on Monday, while gold futures for February 2026 delivery rose around 0.4%. The metal is trading well above its 50-DMA.On the other hand, the dollar slid yet again, with the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) falling back to its 50-DMA for the first time since October 17.&nbsp;It has declined in five of the last six sessions. The problem was caused by a cooling issue at a CyrusOne data centre in the Chicago area.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Fed Rate Cut Hopes</h2>Speculation about a potential Fed rate cut on December 10 has driven up sentiment for precious metals such as gold and silver.&nbsp;Earlier today, spot silver (XAG/USD) hit a<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/spot-silver-trades-near-all-time-highs-as-rate-cut-expectations-rise/cL5a2ZrRELX">&nbsp;fresh high</a> of $55.86 per ounce, at the time of writing, surpassing the previous record of about $54.50 set on October 17.According to data from the CME FedWatch tool, there is an 86.9% probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut at the December 10 meeting. A week back, the figure stood at 71%.Historically, periods of economic or political uncertainty have driven investors toward safe-haven assets such as gold and silver. Expectations of easier monetary policy also tend to boost precious metals by lowering borrowing costs and weakening the dollar.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Investors Remain Bullish</h2>According to a Goldman Sachs survey, as reported by CNBC on Friday, many investors believe the rally is far from over. In a poll of more than 900 institutional clients, 36% expect gold to top $5,000 per ounce by the end of 2026, while another 33% see it landing between $4,500 and $5,000.Overall, more than 70% of respondents anticipate higher prices next year, with only a small minority expecting a pullback to the $3,500 to $4,000 range.Prices have already jumped by more than 60% year-to-date, breaking above the $4,000 mark for the first time on October 8.Brokerages remain bullish, too. Earlier this month, UBS lifted its mid-2026 upside target for gold to $4,900 per ounce from $4,700, saying the forces behind this year’s rally remain intact heading into next year.
