This thing will be the first to mine a coin in space,” Johnston said in a recent conversation with Gali.Johnston suggested that Bitcoin mining could become one of the most practical use cases for space-based computing infrastructure. Starcloud&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://tech.yahoo.com/science/articles/startup-working-orbital-data-centers-190656773.html">told</a> PC Mag that it has submitted a request to the FCC to run 88,000 satellites for data centers in orbit.&nbsp;According to Johnston, the economics of Bitcoin mining hardware made it more suitable for deployment in space than traditional AI systems. He also said Bitcoin mining was well-suited to environments with unconventional or variable energy sources.“With Bitcoin mining, you can basically use any energy source you want anywhere in the world,” he said. It&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cryptorank.io/news/feed/c1e32-bitcoin-miners-sold-5359-btc-as-winter-power-costs-bite-and-their-7-4-billion-treasury-starts-shrinking-fast">reported</a> that the collective BTC held by miners fell 4.44% month over month in February to around 115,335 Bitcoin. However, most of these sales did not occur because Bitcoin’s price fell, but because these companies were seeking liquidity to fund their pivot to AI.Core Scientific (CORZ) also&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/core-scientific-plans-to-sell-more-btc-first-quarter/cZdeLGXRIP7">announced</a> this week that it plans to potentially sell all of its Bitcoin holdings in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026. The company said sales would help finance a large build‑out of AI and high‑performance computing (HPC) data centers in 2026.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/CORZ">CORZ’s stock</a> edged 0.32% higher in overnight trade on Wednesday after a jump of 3.53% in the regular session as crypto stocks&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/winklevoss-led-gemi-stock-sees-biggest-gain-since-debut-on-bitcoin-pump/cZdQKgURIdo">rallied</a> alongside Bitcoin.Meanwhile, Bitdeer Technologies&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/bitcoin-sale-is-not-a-concern-no-plans-to-stop-crypto-mining-says-bitdeer/cZRtkAQR4Uv">announced</a> last month that it had liquidated all of its Bitcoin holdings to fund land acquisition opportunities. In a post on X, the company said that its decision to sell Bitcoin “should not be a concern for the broader market” and added that it plans to keep mining the apex cryptocurrency.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/BTDR">BTDR’s stock</a> edged 0.38% higher in overnight trade after a jump of 4.63% in the regular session.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bitcoin Miners Liquidate Holdings&nbsp;</h2>MARA Holdings, the second-largest holder of Bitcoin after Strategy, didn’t say it needs funds for its AI pivot but did&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/mara-sell-bitcoin-amid-one-billion-net-loss/cZdeZAuRIPZ">revise</a> its treasury strategy earlier this week to include the possibility of selling at least a part of its almost $4 billion BTC reserve. In a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/RobSamuelsIR/status/2028879276091817991">post</a> on X, the company said it has only “expanded” its strategy to allow for Bitcoin sales, but does not intend to “sell the majority of its Bitcoin holdings.”<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MARA/">MARA’s stock</a> fell 1.4% in overnight trade following a pump of 7.27% during the regular session. According to the&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://ir.mara.com/sec-filings/all-sec-filings/content/0001507605-26-000007/mara-20251231.htm">filing</a>, MARA may continue to hold Bitcoin for long-term investment purposes, and it may also buy or sell Bitcoin from time to time, subject to market conditions and capital allocation priorities.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/MARA/sentiment">Mara Holdings (MARA)</a> was down by over 5% as of Tuesday morning. On Stocktwits, the retail sentiment around MARA remained in the ‘extremely bullish territory,’ as chatter levels around it remained ‘extremely high’ over the past day.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Treasury Holdings And Q4 Results</h2>MARA held 53,822 BTC worth approximately $4.7 billion at the end of the previous year. About 28% of those holdings were activated under its digital asset management strategy, including 9,377 Bitcoin (BTC) loaned to counterparties and 5,938 BTC pledged as collateral against $350 million in outstanding credit facilities. The loaned Bitcoin generated $32.1 million in interest income during the year.In its fourth-quarter&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.quiverquant.com/news/MARA+Holdings+Inc.+%28MARA%29+Releases+Q4+2025+Earnings%3A+Steep+Loss%2C+Revenue+and+EPS+Mis">earnings</a> report, MARA reported a net loss of $1.7 billion, primarily driven by a $1.5 billion loss from changes in the fair value of digital assets. Revenue totaled $202.3 million, down 5.63% year-over-year and below the consensus estimate of $262.0 million. The firm reported&nbsp;a loss per share of $4.52.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Fair Value Of Bitcoin Holdings</h2>MARA recorded a $422.2 million decrease in the fair value of its Bitcoin holdings during 2025. A separately managed account funded with 2,000 BTC incurred a net trading loss of $22.1 million before being terminated in December.
