EV maker Rivian Automotive (RIVN) is reportedly reworking an element in its vehicle doors due to concerns about potential safety issues.According to a Bloomberg <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-10-03/rivian-plans-ev-door-redesign-to-address-safety-concerns">report</a> on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter, the company plans to incorporate a manual release that is more clearly visible and located near the electrically powered interior handles in the rear doors of its next-generation R2 SUV.The redesign comes on the heels of customer and employee concerns regarding the current design, the report added. It aims to address issues arising from the R1 vehicle redesign last year, which relocated the rear manual releases to a difficult-to-access location, potentially slowing occupants’ attempts to exit the vehicle if the electrical system loses power, sources told Bloomberg.In the company’s R2 SUV, slated for release in the first half of 2026, the mechanism for opening the rear doors and positioning of the manual release will be similar to the front doors, the report said.It is unclear whether the redesign will apply solely to the upcoming R2 SUV or also to the company’s R1 vehicles, the report added.Rivian shares traded marginally higher at the time of writing. Rivian Automotive, Inc. (RIVN) on Thursday said that it delivered 13,201 vehicles in the three months through the end of September, up from the 10,018 deliveries reported in the corresponding quarter of 2024.The company also <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20251002676995/en/Rivian-Releases-Q3-2025-Production-and-Delivery-Figures-and-Sets-Date-for-Third-Quarter-2025-Financial-Results">slashed</a> its full-year delivery guidance to 41,500 to 43,500 vehicles from its previous forecast of between 40,000 and 46,000 cars, as EV demand is expected to dwindle following the expiry of the federal tax credit on the purchase of EVs on Sept. 30. Shares of the company fell 7% on Thursday morning at the time of writing.On Stocktwits, the retail sentiment around <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/RIVN">RIVN stock</a> fell from ‘neutral’ to ‘bearish’ territory over the past 24 hours, while message volume fell from ‘normal’ to ‘low’ levels.The company also stated on Thursday that it produced 10,720 vehicles at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, during the quarter, down from the 13,157 manufactured in the corresponding period of 2024. The Normal facility is now Rivian’s only functioning manufacturing facility. Last month, the company broke ground on its Georgia facility, which could eventually produce 400,000 vehicles per year. Production at the facility is slated to start in 2028.Rivian is now ramping up for the launch of the R2 SUV in 2026. The midsize version is expected to launch in the first half of 2026 and is projected to have a price tag of $45,000. Rivian plans to manufacture validation builds of the vehicle later this year at its Illinois facility, which has the capacity to produce up to 215,000 vehicles annually. A frayed cable can weaken the designed seat belt load capacity, presenting an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety, the regulator added. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) will focus on the integrity of the seat belt assembly, installation method, and identify potential changes needed in the design and manufacturing process.Rivian’s electric delivery vans are primarily used by Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN),&nbsp; which also owns a 13% stake in the company. Rivian shares finished Tuesday with their biggest gain in nearly a month after the EV maker broke ground on a new Georgia plant that could eventually build 400,000 vehicles a year and create 7,500 jobs by 2030.The stock closed up 5.3% at $14.32 on Tuesday, with the stock adding another 0.7% in after-hours trading.Coming in two phases of 200,000 units each, the Social Circle plant will have an eventual capacity of 400,000 units. Building is expected to start in 2026 and production is scheduled for 2028. Rivian stated the plant will produce next-gen vehicles, including the midsize R2 SUV and R3 crossover.The investment is described as multi-billion-dollar. An analysis commissioned by the company estimated more than 15,000 direct and indirect jobs tied to the project, including about 2,000 construction jobs, with over $1 billion in annual labor income once fully operational.The development comes a month after&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/rivian-plans-shut-down-of-illinois-plant-for-three-weeks/chr1UQZRd5b">Rivian said that it will close its factory in Normal, Illinois, for three weeks</a> starting in September, as it ramps up for the launch of the R2 SUV in 2026.&nbsp;The midsize version is expected to launch in the first half of 2026 and is projected to have a price tag of $45,000. Rivian plans to manufacture validation builds of the vehicle later this year at the Illinois facility, which can produce up to 215,000 units annually. The company said the Georgia plant will provide additional capacity for the program.For the second quarter, Rivian reported revenue of $1.30 billion, up from $1.12 billion a year earlier, while its adjusted loss widened to $0.80 per share. Rivian Stock Soars On Georgia Plant Kickoff With 400,000 EV Capacity — Retail Hails ‘One Of The Best Technical Setups’

Rivian Automotive CEO RJ Scaringe&nbsp;believes the EV maker’s $5.8 billion technology alliance with Volkswagen Group will underpin the German automaker’s planned ID.1, a $20,000 EV he called Europe’s “answer to China.”&nbsp;Speaking at&nbsp;Morgan Stanley’s 13th Annual Laguna Conference on Thursday evening, Scaringe said the launch would draw close attention from competitors.“Every car company will buy it. BYD will buy it. Xiaomi will buy it and XPeng will buy it,” he said. He added that they would be “impressed” by the vehicle’s network architecture, ECU layout and electrical systems, which were designed to scale from VW’s entry-level models to Porsche and Audi flagships.R2 Autonomy&nbsp;To Leap Beyond HighwaysScaringe also spotlighted Rivian’s own product pipeline, led by the $45,000 R2 five-passenger SUV. While Rivian already offers hands-free driving on highways, he said the next step is “hands-free everywhere,” followed by “eyes-off” operation and eventually turn-by-turn autonomy.&nbsp;He said that&nbsp;the shift represents “something like a 50x increase in the number of roads that the vehicle is going to be able to drive on, driving itself.”The company plans to hold an event at the end of the year to showcase its autonomy technology, including hardware details, its compute and perception stack, and demonstrations of the system in operation.Scaringe forecast that hands-free driving on all roads will expand next year, with “eyes-off” autonomy targeted for 2027–2028. He said that if executed well, the feature could “unlock massive pools of demand” and significantly expand Rivian’s customer base.Data Flywheel Powers Rivian’s AI TrainingRivian’s Gen2 system marks a clean break from the Mobileye-based setup in its first vehicles. Scaringe said Rivian brought its compute, sensors and perception fully in-house, enabling the company to build a “data flywheel” to train its autonomy system using real-world driving data collected from its fleet.He said Rivian’s smaller vehicle base compared with Tesla’s is offset by advanced camera and radar systems, particularly 3D imaging radar, which helps improve training in difficult conditions like rain or fog.Not Enough EV Choices Under $50KScaringe&nbsp;reiterated that EV adoption in the U.S. remains stuck at around 8% because of limited options for mainstream buyers. “The number of great choices [under $50,000] is well under the number of fingers on my hand,” he said, pointing to Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y as the only broadly compelling choices today.
