Saudi Arabia is increasingly confident that Iran directly launched a complex missile & drone attack from its southwestern territory on Saturday. The drones & missiles appeared to have flown low to the ground, so that they weren't detected by Saudi radar or defense systems.

US admin quickly concluded that Iran launched cruise missiles & drones on Saturday. UK & France, key US allies, say they have not seen evidence to support the allegations that Iran carried out the attacks.

US has taken the lead in providing security for the Persian Gulf monarchies for decades in part out of a strategy of protecting the world's oil supply.

Saudi Arabia's cabinet released a statement asking the international community for support in responding to the attack. Riyadh didn't mention Iran, though it has rejected claims of responsibility by Yemen's Iranian-back Houthi rebels.

US does not have mutual defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, therefore has no legal basis to attack Iran.

@Ro_Patel All the more reason to increase our oil production capacity and get in the habit of letting the House of Saud worry about themselves. Especially if they keep making a habit of attacking Yemen.

Tell It Right

@Tell_It_Right Fair point, unfortunately, large GOP donors are a large part of the existing oil infrastructure in the US & their continued support for the GOP is predicated on maintaining the status-quo.

There is little-to-no-reason why the Trump Admin is rolling back emission & milage standards for autos and the Clean Air Act & Clean Water Act other than as quid-pro-quo for their large donors.

In 2001 under the Bush Admin, the NHTSA blocked Honda & Toyota from installing stop-start tech in their vehicles. The tech (currently used in Europe) would have saved 4B gallons of gasoline/year and would have reduced air & noise pollution. Further, the Bush Admin enacted the Energy Policy Act in 2005 - which has come to be known as the “Dick Cheney energy bill”. Cheney was CEO of Halliburton from 1995 until he left in 2000.

The avg American drives 37 miles/day. Nissan Leaf has 200 mile range.

Therefore, the oil infrastructure will continue as long as voters continue to vote Republican.

@Ro_Patel How is the electricity produced where you live? And does your electrical grid handle the demand well? Not poling fun at the Leaf or other EV's. Just simply stating that in much of the country, driving an EV = driving a coal powered car. That's fine if you want to do that (free market choices). And maybe the electrical grid in your area can handle it if a major portion of drivers switched to EV's. And maybe your power suppliers can magically generate more electricity without harming the environment. (I personally believe solar has a lot of promise, at least in the south where we have 5 hours per day avg solar usable sunlight. I've even thought about powering my own home with 100% solar.) Until that happens I'm skeptical with pushing everybody to EV's. And I certainly don't want to do it by force.

@Tell_It_Right Sorry for the late reply.

In order to live in a civilized society, one must accept some govt intervention in the market - it is simply good public policy - from time zones to labor & discrimination laws to amount of chemicals in our water. Using your example of cars - the govt should not allow people to drive around in a tank or drive at any speed. There needs to be some sensible laws.

IMHO, it is incorrect to assert that 1970s oil shock was attributed to drilling restrictions in the US. The oil crisis was created when OPEC proclaimed an embargo to target nations that supported Israel during the Yom Kippur War (price of oil increased from $3/barrel to $12/barrel). Another shock occurred in 1979 after the Iranian Revolution (After Mossaddegh briefly nationalised the Iranian Oil Industry in 1952, the US/CIA orchestrated a coup d'état in 1953 & installed The Shah as their "strongman").

For the next 20 years oil prices continued to drop.

@Tell_It_Right So, why has the price of oil gone up since 2000 - China. China become a member of the WTO in 2001. Subsequently, emerging market demand continued to grow.

OPEC, a cartel, is the single most influential agency affecting the price of oil today.

Further, I had mentioned the 2005 Energy Policy - w/n the policy, fracking is exempt from the Safe Water Act & it strips the EPA from regulating the industry. The EPA shoulders very little blame for the price of oil.

As to the term "free market" - that does not exist outside of textbooks. Any law, rule, regulation, etc is a perversion to that idea. In order to have free/fair market, there can not be any asymmetry of information - and this is only possible when laws, rules, regulations, etc are enacted, therefore not a free market by definition.

@Ro_Patel Wasn't fracking hardly done back in 2000? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the number of fracking wells really pick up around 2014 or 2015? If I'm right, fracking would have had little impact on the price of oil, while China's demand does (on that we're very much in agreement).

I'm not saying we have a totally free market. But surely you'd agree that fracking has made the oil market much more of a free market than it was before fracking became a thing. Surely you agree that the federal govt owning over 80% of the land in the state of Nevada, much of which is very oil rich, is very much a distortion on the oil market.

I'm not saying totally ditch the EPA or anything like that. I'm just saying appreciate how fracking has made oil on private land available to enter the market (since the government has tight control over the easy to access oil on public land). Thing about all the benefits to society with people able to drive what they want.

@Ro_Patel Women have access to jobs they didn't otherwise have when cars were cheap enough for a family to buy two cars. And don't overlook the cost in insurance, particularly the medical liability portion, that comes with everybody driving teeny go-carts relative to the cars I drove when I was young. I'm not saying force everybody to drive the kind of cars I like to drive (because I'm not a my-way-or-the-highway kind of person). I'm just saying let those who are concerned about traffic fatalities buy the heavy car they want without CAFE fines punishing them for it.

@Tell_It_Right Fracking began in the 1950s, if I'm not mistaken. In Western Canada, we started in the 1970s. You are correct that massive hydraulic fracturing projects began in 2010. In 2000, there were about 276,000 natural gas wells in the US. But by 2010, that number had almost doubled to 510,000. And every year, about 13,000 new wells are drilled.

Fracking does not in itself make the market more free - it simply adds to the supply of oil. When that supply is in excess of the demand, the price will subsequently fall. However, when that supply is disrupted by OPEC, then the oil price will increase. In addition, untapped reserves do not distort the oil market - only the current supply & demand. We are currently swimming in oil. We have over 50+ years of oil left on the planet.

@Ro_Patel @Tell_It_Right. Let me tell you this. Car makers are wayyy behind the times on the enginering of making anything reliable for long term use. Do Not buy anything first gen. Who wants to spend 25 or 30k on a hybrid thats gonna play out after 100k miles. Turn around buy another or spend 7k in repairs. My gas and diesel hogs that will trek 300k or 400k are well worth spending the extra $5 or $10 dollars every fill up a week then buying modern junk thats gonna save pennies a week...

@Tell_It_Right There was a paper I read, maybe 10 years ago, about auto fatalities and the size of vehicles. It was posited that having multiple size & weight of autos contribute to increased fatality rates. Without regulation, bumper heights on vehicles do not match up. Further, the notion that bigger is better is creating a war on size/weight of autos on the road. It was an interesting paper - imagine if we all drove around in golf carts...how fun would that be!! I understand that a car is an extension of the drivers personality & that one does not want to limit a person's choice but can you honestly say that CAFE standards limited and/or added a significant cost to the purchase of a vehicle. Shouldn't we be striving to use less gas/oil. The same argument was used when heating oil was getting phased out - govt/insurance companies limiting choice...really...really...no one dies of exposure & we are doing fine with nat gas/electric heat.
