That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. $YY In continuation of my mental illness talking to myself, is anyone else please with the stock price rise since the Q1 earnings report? I&#39;m cheering and I think there are two more weeks of the slow-motion rise. In my simplistic analysis, all one has to do is look at the calendar (anything more complex will probably give me brain damage). You&#39;ve got to buy/own it by next Friday (6/20) to collect the dividend. Annualized, with the current stock price rise, we&#39;re now looking at almost 8%. Even for simpletons like me, that ain&#39;t chopped liver.

The problem is that management wants to keep that cash. The money that they are disturbing over the next 3 years almost aligns with what the business will produce. They should just do a massive instant buyback or special dividend because they are not good capital allocators. Btw, the dividends are taxed as ordinary income for US holders.

@maxvoskr I mostly agree with your assessment of JOYY. I see the more limited upside potential as helping to diversify a portfolio having some high-risk/high-reward stocks. It achieves more balance with lower risk (given the cash value) but more limited reward. Here&#39;s where I disagree: With the big pot of cash sitting there in a poor prospect business, and the current situation fact that the cost of obtaining capital for growth so high (that&#39;s known in the work I do for a living that I apply to my investing hobby), JOYY&#39;s cash pile is a juicy target to be grabbed as a cheaper way for capital raising while just leaving it&#39;s poor business sitting to wither on the vine. So while it&#39;s not a good idea to buy stocks in hopes of a buyout, creative capital-starved companies will notice this major cash pile and look for ways to obtain needed growth capital (versus current market conditions where any financings results in share prices getting whacked). Just my two cents.
