(AUPH) was among the top five trending equities on Stocktwits late Sunday as retail traders discussed reports regarding developments following a lawsuit filed by the company against Dr. George Tidmarsh, who served as the director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) and was appointed to the post on an interim basis in late July.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Tidmarsh’s Rapid Exit</h2>A New York Times report&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/02/health/fda-drug-unit-chief.html">stated</a> on Sunday that Tidmarsh said in an interview that he was placed on administrative leave on Friday after he raised concerns over the legality of a new program that was put in place to approve drugs rapidly, reasoning that the new program “injected politics into the drug review program, superseding decisions based on science.”The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) placed him on leave, pending the outcome of an investigation. Tidmarsh claimed that the move may have been a preemptive one to his offer to resign in protest against the new program.In the Times interview, Tidmarsh said he didn’t want to work in a toxic environment, attributing it to&nbsp;Dr. Vinay Prasad, who returned as chief medical and scientific officer&nbsp;at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) and also oversaw vaccines and gene therapies.&nbsp;Tidmarsh took exception to an October FDA announcement that it would&nbsp;approve a slate of drugs in record time. “The effort was going to basically change the entire paradigm of the legal underpinnings of drug approvals that have for decades supported the actions on the safety and effectiveness of drugs,” he said. “There was insufficient legal support for what they wanted to do, and so I didn’t agree.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Aurinia Connection</h2>HHS’s move came after Kevin Tang, the chair of Aurinia Pharma, filed a complaint against Tidmarsh on Sunday, alleging that the latter has acted out of his “longstanding personal vendetta against Tang, STAT&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.statnews.com/2025/11/02/fda-george-tidmarsh-regulator-kevin-tang/">reported</a>. Tidmarsh previously served as CEO of La Jolla, with Tang serving as the company’s chair at that time.Tidmarsh claimed in a LinkedIn post, which has since been retracted, that companies working on lupus nephritis therapies haven‘t conducted post-approval studies to “demonstrate a benefit on hard clinical endpoints,”&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.biospace.com/fda/cder-director-singles-out-aurinias-drug-in-questioning-reliance-on-surrogate-endpoints">according</a> to Biospace.Posting on LinkedIn on Sept. 30, Tidmarsh said, “We have approved drugs with significant toxicity like vocolosporin [Lupkynis’ active ingredient] that has not been shown to provide a direct clinical benefit for patients. He also stated that “for some diseases such as lupus nephritis, companies have not run trials to demonstrate a benefit on hard clinical endpoints.”Lupkynis is Aurinia’s FDA-approved oral medication for treating lupus nephritis, or kidney inflammation caused by an autoimmune disorder. It was approved in January 2021. Responding to the post, Aurinia said it “stands behind the favorable benefit/risk profile” of Lupkynis. For the six months ended June, the drug fetched $126.5 million in revenue for Aurinia, marking a 23% year-over-year increase. It accounted for 96% of the company’s revenue for the period.In a post on X, STAT’s Adam Feuerstein<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/adamfeuerstein/status/1985132443901259898"> stated&nbsp;</a>that the lawsuit filed by Aurinia also accused Tidmarsh of extorting money from American Labs, a private company owned by Tang that supplies ingredients for a thyroid medicine. Tidmarsh reportedly directed the FDA to ya nk thyroid drugs off the market to hurt American Labs.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Retail’s Saying</h2>On Stocktwits, retail sentiment toward&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/AUPH">Aurinia Pharma stock&nbsp;</a>remained ‘bullish’ as of late Sunday, and the retail chatter also stayed high. The message volume over the seven days, ending late Sunday, climbed about 300%.&nbsp;A bullish watcher called Tidmarsh’s action “stock manipulation.” Another user also shared a similar view. “I'm almost certain Tidmarsh wrote this post to drive down the stock price. He bought Aurinia shares at a low price. (RNA) shares&nbsp;soared over 43% in Monday’s early premarket session after the mid-cap biopharma focusing on developing RNA therapeutics called antibody oligonucleotide conjugates (AOC), announced a deal to be bought by Swiss pharma giant Novartis (NVS).<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/RNA">Avidity Biosciences</a> stock has gained more than 60% this year.<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Novartis Deal Terms</h2>In a statement released on Sunday, Novartis said it would acquire San Diego-based Avidity Biosciences following the separation of the latter’s early-stage precision cardiology programs. The deal, approved by the boards of both companies, is valued at $72 per share in cash. This represented a 46% premium over RNA stock’s closing price of $49.15 on Friday.The total transaction value is $12 billion on a fully diluted basis. Avidity Biosciences currently boasts a market capitalization of $7.17 billion.Vas Narasimhan, CEO of Novartis, said, “Avidity’s pioneering AOC platform for RNA therapeutics ​and its late-stage assets bolster our commitment to delivering innovative, targeted, and potentially first-in-class medicines to treat devastating, progressive neuromuscular diseases.”Before the merger's closing, Avidity will transfer its early-stage precision cardiology programs and collaborations to SpinCo, a wholly owned subsidiary of Avidity. Holders of Avidity common stock will receive a distribution of one share of SpinCo for every ten shares of Avidity they hold and/or a pro rata cash distribution of the proceeds received by Avidity before the closing if certain SpinCo assets are, or SpinCo itself is, sold to a third party.The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2026, subject to the completion of a spin-off or the sale of SpinCo and other customary closing conditions, including the receipt of regulatory approvals and the approval of Avidity stockholders.Novartis said the proposed acquisition raises the expected 2024-2029 sales growth from 5% to 6% on a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) basis, representing a significant opportunity to deliver substantial shareholder returns over time.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What Retail’s Saying About The Buyout Deal</h2>Retail sentiment toward Avidity Biosciences stock flipped to ‘extremely bullish’ by early Monday from ‘bearish’ a day ago. CEO Jeffrey Stein said that the designations underscore the importance of the drug as a potential new non-vaccine prophylactic for seasonal influenza.“Individuals who have chronic medical conditions, advanced age, or are immune compromised may not be adequately protected by current vaccines, leaving them at higher risk for infection and complications from flu. Eli Lilly's stock jumped over 5% on Tuesday after U.S.President Donald Trump unveiled a plan to lower U.S. drug prices, which included a “TrumpRx” direct-to-consumer website and a pricing agreement with Pfizer.&nbsp;Pfizer became the first company to accept the administration’s terms, agreeing to slash drug prices by up to 85% and secure a three-year exemption from pharmaceutical tariffs.BMO Capital Markets analyst Evan Seigerman said the Pfizer deal effectively provided a model for other drugmakers such as Eli Lilly to balance pricing cooperation with policy compliance. Eli Lilly Stock Jumps As Trump’s Drug Price Crackdown Spurs Sector Rally; Analysts Say Pfizer Deal Sets Template For Big Pharma

Analysts said the plan signals a political win that could reshape how major drugmakers engage with U.S. policymakers.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States will impose a 100% tariff on branded and patented pharmaceutical products starting Oct. 1 unless manufacturers are actively building plants in the country.&nbsp;As part of a series of late-night posts on Truth Social on Thursday,&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115267512131958759">Trump said</a> the exemption will apply only to firms that have “broken ground” or are “under construction.” “There will, therefore, be no Tariff on these Pharmaceutical Products if construction has started.”&nbsp;The announcement intensifies the administration’s push to shift drug manufacturing to the U.S. Last month, Trump said the U.S. would begin with a&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/trump-plans-gradual-tariff-hike-on-imported-pharma-to-250-over-18-months-to-boost-us-production/chr1KgrRd2x">“small tariff”</a> on imported drugs before raising duties to 150% within 18 months and ultimately to 250%.&nbsp;Pharmaceuticals had previously been exempt from Trump’s reciprocal tariff program; however, the new duties will apply to prescription drugs, biologics, specialty medicines, and over-the-counter products, except for generic drugs, which remain excluded.Major drugmakers have responded unevenly.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/LLY">Eli Lilly</a> has committed more than $50 billion since 2020 to U.S. expansion, including $27 billion for four new “mega sites.” The company supports maintaining the U.S. as the “world’s leading destination for biopharmaceutical research and manufacturing” and agrees with the administration’s goal of more fairly sharing drug costs across developed countries, even as it warns that broad tariffs could raise costs and limit access.Lilly’s stream on Stocktwits gained traction late Thursday after Trump’s announcement, with sentiment tilting ‘bullish’ as retail traders bet that the company would benefit from the latest federal policy. “$LLY did great with plant announcement in houston this week.
