But, my observation with index ETFs is that volume by time isn&#39;t near as a reliable indicator as for individual stocks.  And it probably has to do with all the buying and selling of index futures and/or the underlying stock that SPX options market makers have to do to simply hedge their books while holding the other side of customer&#39;s position so they can fulfill the contract obligations when the customer exercises the position.
