AP = authorized participants.   A breed of market makers that make ETFs work.

They basically ensure that ETF share prices return to NAV after being thrown off by market bid/ask prices.  Because this is a smaller low volume ETF, deviation from NAV is always going to be larger.

When the bid/ask for an ETF drives price below NAV, APs buy shares, driving price back up towards NAV, then redeem the shares at NAV from the ETF fund manager (ie destroy the shares) and make money on that spread.  

When price goes too high, they do the opposite.  Draw shares from the ETF fund manager at NAV, then sell them at a premium to the market.  The selling pressure and minor dilution returns higher prices back to NAV

Retail investors don’t purchase and sell enough to drive prices as much as APs.  Institutions do, and they’re part of the ecosystem as well.  

APs are a necessary entity in ETFs.  We don’t need them with mutual funds because there’s not that bid/ask difference you get with trading on a public exchange.  They ensure each share La are tied to a funds NAV and total Assets Under Management (AUM).

BUT, you SHOULD always do the same - buy when there’s a discount. Your trading app can show this.  I can post a screenshot if you’d like

@daylite it’s .16% so relatively small and stable when compared to the giant market pullback this week.  Still not fun to see drops, but way better than the market at large
