Check out how the momentum meter has performed vs. the S&P 500 index this year:

The Large-Cap Nasdaq 100

The Nasdaq 100 Top 25 list (+1.05%) underperformed the Nasdaq 100 index (+2.01%).

There were two major changes to the list this week.

Analog Devices (+3.08%) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (+5.49%) joined the list.

They replaced Monster Beverage Corp. (-8.27%) and Mondelez International (-0.42%).

The Nasdaq 100 list generally has the least movement each week, and this week is no exception.

The Growth-Centric Russell 2000

The Russell 2000 Top 25 list (+10.45%) significantly outperformed the Russell 2000 index (+1.94%).

There were six major changes to the list this week.

Global Blood Therapeutics (+95.11%), Rhythm Pharmaceuticals (+60.63%), Universal Logistics (+16.47%), Geron Corp. (+27.37%), Mirum Pharmaceuticals (+17.29%), and Allegheny Technologies (+16.59%) joined the list.

They replaced Range Resources (-7.05%), Helmerich & Payne (-12.85%), Patterson UTI Energy (-13.17%), Kosmos Energy (-6.15%), Valhi Inc. (-19.82%), and Evolus Inc. (-23.76%).

Biotechnology stocks were a clear standout this week as the sector continued its run. Meanwhile, several energy stocks were knocked off the list.

The Top 25 lists’ Top Dawg was Global Blood Therapeutics,Β which rallied 95.11%.

It can be difficult to know exactly why a stock is trending, but not this week.

Global Blood Therapeutics rallied after the Wall Street Journal reported Pfizer is in advanced talks to buy the drugmaker for $5 billion.

The company’s treatment for sickle cell disease received U.S. approval in 2019, and its pipeline of drugs makes it a prime target for a cash-flush Pfizer.

$GBT is up 109.59% YTD.
