Adani Power announced that it has signed an agreement with the Bhutan government-owned Druk Green Power for developing a 570 MW hydroelectric project in Bhutan.

In an exchange filing issued on September 6, the Adani Group subsidiary said Druk Green Power Corp. Ltd. (DGPC), Bhutan’s state-owned generation utility, today signed the Shareholders Agreement (SHA) for setting up a 570 MW Wangchhu hydroelectric project in the landlocked country.

The company also added that the developers signed the Concession Agreement (CA) for the project with the Royal Government of Bhutan.

Scope of Project

The project is part of the government's plans to add another 15,000 MW in hydropower and 5,000 MW in solar generation capacity by 2040.

The Wangchhu project will see an investment of about ₹6000 crore in setting up the renewable energy power plant and related infrastructure.

The company added that the project will begin in the first half of 2026, and it expects to complete the project in the span of 5 years.

Speaking on the matter, Adani Power CEO SB Khyalia said, "The Wangchhu hydroelectric project will critically meet Bhutan’s peak winter demand, when hydropower generation is low. During the summer months, it would export power to India.”

Earlier this week, in another development, the company received approval from the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, to commence operations at the Dhirauli mine located in Singrauli district, Madhya Pradesh.

The mine, owned by Mahan Energen Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Power, has a peak production capacity of 6.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

In the past week of trade, the company shares, amid the larger volatility in the market, closed with overall gains of 0.49% in 5 trading sessions. It also closed in green on Friday. In the past month of trade, the company shares have seen an uptick of ₹42.85 or 7.55%. The current share price stands at ₹609.70 per share.
